You don't own me
I'm not just one of your many toys
You don't own me
Don't say I can't go with other boys
Don't tell me what to do
Don't tell me what to say
An' please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display
You don't own me
Don't try to change me in anyway
You don't own me
Don't tie me down cause I'll never stay
I don't tell you what to say
I don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you
I'm young and I love to be young
I'm free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please

@very-rusty saidAwwwww, someone got their little feelings hurt. Apparently.
I wouldn't give him the pleasure of kissing your butt if I were you. 🙂 He would enjoy that too much!

What a crybaby.
@shallow-blue saidWay, way before my time.
Pfft, children these days, thinking the cover is the original...

That said, Joan Jett is a good singer, unlike some other people who have covered it.
I will say this, though. Joan Jett doing this song is more true to herself than Lesley Gore doing this song. It is a theme that runs through most of Jett's songs. Gore's last hit before this song was "It's My Party". Not exactly a feminist anthem. And her next hit following this one was "That's the Way Boys Are". Another apology for male bad behavior.
I think (and it's only my opinion) that Joan Jett has more of a right to the lyrics of this song. At least she's not a hypocrite about it.
@shallow-blue saidHe has matching tie clip and cufflinks AND shirts that use cufflinks.
@Kevin-Eleven
I like your new avatar. It's elegant.
@shallow-blue saidIt's also worth bearing in mind that the song was written by two men.
