Some players have the same names so it helps casual fans to keep track of them. They are drafted from the college into the pro's it helps put alumni fans in the stadium seats if they know what college they attended. It is also just a point of interest.
Why does the player roster have their college names on it? Seems a bit unneccessary.

Whenever they show stat graphics on the TV (age, height, weight), college is almost always included.
Here is something that might be of interest to Europeans. The Dallas Cowboys are bringing in a European player for a tryout for the NFL. They will take him to training camp and see how he plays.
COLLEGE: Carl-Johan Bjork joins the Dallas Cowboys as an international player from Sweden. He just completed his second season in NFL Europe this spring with the Amsterdam Admirals starting 10 games and recording 47 tackles and one interception. He helped lead the Admirals to a World Bowl victory in 2005 as a rookie, registering 27 tackles, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. The victory was the first NFLEL Championship for Amsterdam.
PERSONAL: Bjork has nine years of amateur football experience having played with the Team Europe squad - a team of top junior players in Europe put together to compete against other high school all-star teams from the USA, Canada, Japan and Mexico. He was also named the 2004 MVP in the Swedish league and was a three time Swedish champion with the Stockholm Mean Machines. He was a member of the National team and was a two-time Nordic champ as well.
NO COLLEGE HERE!

I only asked because I was having a long discussion with someone on this site about american football vs soccer. I then read a short story, about college football (Bleachers, by John Grisham), and thought I might try and get interested in the sport. Problem is, it airs at around 3am in England.
You might be able to tape it I hope. I think you will enjoy it if you do. Some games can be boring. But the more you learn about the game and the history the more you will enjoy it. It is the same with your football (soccer). If I were able to watch it as much as the Europeans I would like it much more. You almost have to grow up with it. Like tastes in music.
The Beer commercials are great. Oh and don't forget the cheerleaders. The site I provided has a link to some good CL shots.
