The only one with 420 in their name anyway.

I wouldn't really say they suck. I would say they aren't as good as people make them out to be. They made a few good songs and definately weren't great. The bigger issue that makes Nirvana famous is Curt Cobain. I think he was self-medicating (or self-inflicting) his severe depression issues with drugs and alcohol. He should be remembered as a drug-addict that managed to write a few decent songs instead of a musical genius that was a martyr of the music industry as some have tried to idolize as.

Here's some haiku

I hate Nirvana
I am a lonely hater
Nobody listens.

They may not have been that good, but they broke new ground in music and that is what is interesting. They were a marker for the new generation. My unfortunate generation had Tiffany, wang friggin chung, and that earwig phil collins!😛 They were fresh and broke the music stalemate.

OK, I've been thinking about it, and I have concluded that a large portion of my hate for Curt and Nirvana stems from my love of Shannon Hoon. In my opinion, Shannon was a superior musician and a FAR superior singer. And, sadly, most people don't even remember who he was, largely because Curt died that same year.

Well, at the very least, credit Cobain and Nirvana for eradicating what remained of the 80's hair bands in '91.

That being said, I think GUitar World could have found someone a bit more deserving of the title "Guitarist of the Decade". Maybe, say, someone who bothered to stick around for the entire decade?

I remember Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon. They were a good band and had some cool songs...especially 1993's "No Rain"...but alas, like all Rockers that like to burn out by using heroin, he did just that...dying on a school bus no less..Cobain's and Hoon's death were about 18 months apart....the best Band out of Seattle in my opinion is Alice in Chains.....they outrocked everybody!...and then, Lane Staley dies...by what?...you guessed it: Heroin
Heroin has done more to derail Rock-N-Roll than anything else...😳

I liked Alice in Chains, but, call me crazy, I liked Mad Season even more (the band, not the worthless Matchbox20 album).

It's just that, while Curt was writing lyrics like:
With the lights out, it's less dangerous.
Here we are now, entertain us.
A malloto, an albino
A mosquito, my libito. Yeah!

Shannon Hoon was writing lyrics like:
As I sit here in this misery, I don't think I'll ever, no, no
See the sun from here.
And, oh, as I fade away
They'll all look at me and say
Hey look at him, I'll never live that way
But that's OK.
They're just afraid to change.
And when you feel life 'aint worth livin'
You know, you got to stand up and take a look around
And a look way up to the sky
And when your deepest thoughts are broken
Keep on dreamin', boy, 'cause when you stop dreamin'
It's time to die
And, oh, as I fade away
They'll all look at me and say
Hey look at him, and where he is these days
When life is hard, you have to change
When life is hard, you have to change.

Facelift and Dirt are two of the best albums of the ''grunge'' period, anyway Layne Staley called a song ''We die young''..............profetical.

What Kurt Cobain did and Nirvana perfected was angst.

You knew that Kurt hated a lot of stuff: PR, his parents, his life, himself, the world in general, not being a success, then being a success. But what made Nirvana's songs work was Kurt was always trying to make some sort of sense out of his depressing outlook on life. This connected with a lot of people.

They were a phenomenon that we won't experience again.

The band that was destined to be huge but was derailed by you guessed it, herion, was Mother Love Bone. Awesome band, fronted by Andrew wood with the heart of Pearl Jam behind him (before Pearl Jam obviously). Andrew Wood was probably the only front man in the Seattly scene that truly wanted fame, and would have reveled in it. A Mick Jagger for the 90's. Then he OD'd and the the rest is history.

You quote Nirvanna pop music... I'd post good lyrics for you but that is just too many 4 letter words. 😉

One guy was sad and wrote pretty music... one guy was angry and wrote rocking grunge...

Both are great, but you can't compare apples and watermellons!

I resign my argument.

But I reserve the right to hate Nirvana for no good reason.
