I'm computer ignorant (and my Chess isn't much better) but when using an older version of Windows I used to get a ding-ding sound and a small message in the bottom right of the screen saying I had new e-mails. Could someone advise how I set up this feature in Windows XP.

Many thanks

I'll assume that you are (still) using Outlook Express:

1) Select menu option "Tools" / "Options". A new window will open.
2) Go to "General" tab.
3) Click on on "Play sound when new messages arrive".
4) Click on the "Apply" button followed by the "OK" button.

I'v just checked/did what you said and that box is already ticked - and no, I haven't got my speakers turned off.

Thanks for your reply but further info/advice appreciated.

OK, with XP, top tool bar>Edit>Preferences. On the drop down open "mail & newsgroups>Notifications>check"play a sound"and "system new mail sound">then'OK'

Should happen .skeeter

PS Edit: sorry Martin, disregard a) All of the above. Missed the bit about you having OE. This applies to Mozilla only.

Are you referring to an option to automatically have OE check for new mail on a regular scheduled basis while you're online? If so, there is an option to set that to work on a timed basis, If you don't have that on, it will not check unless you manually tell OE to look for new mail.

The option is located in the same place as the previous one mentioned, but just a couple more check boxes down. If not selected it appears grayed out, but when you click it, you also have to include how often to check, then select apply, as before.

Maybe that will help. Marc
