Well, aside from cutting down on the number of programs running at once and adding more RAM to your computer here is what I would suggest:

1: Right click on my computer and select properties.
2: Click on the tab that says Advanced (on the top).
3: Click on the button that says Settings in the box marked Performance.
4: Click on the tab that says Advanced (on the top).
5: Click the button marked Change in the box labelled Virtual memory.
6: Select the option that says System managed size and then click on the button marked Set (Important!! You have to click the Set button as clicking on OK at the bottom will keep your system at its previous configuration.)
7: Click OK
8: Click OK
9: Click OK
10: Restart your computer. 🙂

11: Start drinking large amounts of alcohol to console yourself for having to go through so many steps (yet again) to keep you computer running!! IF you are lucky, you may experience total existence failure!! If not, you will have to do more of this in the future. 😛

are you sure it was virtual memory? cause that's when your computer uses your hard drive as RAM...

The cat has posted the VM settings, so let's not do that again:
typical problems will arise if
1) your system basically doesn't have enough RAM
2) you are runnig buggy-software (mainly, software with 'memory leaks' as they are called)

Possible solutions:
a) buy more RAM
b) try to run as few applications at the same time as possible
c) look to see if the problems arise when you are running a particular program, especially if it is only after you've been running it for a while. If so, its probably a memory leak: try alternative software or keep turning the offending software off every now and then.
d) If you are using XP's "suspend" rather than turning off, try a turn off at least once a day instead. It will help the environment too.
e) don't have mutliple users on the same PC at the same time: shut down to log off, don't use the XP "fast switch" thing on a resource-limited PC

Those are the main contenders I suspect while running under XP.

Yep,it's when I run a particular program.problem is,it's a one of a kind program,there's no alternative.Guess I'll have to get more RAM.
Everyone,thanks for the advise 🙂
