I have Combat Chess! It has animated pieces who do battle. I generally turn off the animations. I am trying to learn how to bear level 4 (no mistakes) consistently, but it's not happening yet. Fortunately it always plays the same move in the same position.

You can download many many (strong) and free chess engines (and no ads n stuff). There are Graphical user interfaces for it under which you can use them all togther.
check out xboard (most popular) or playwithARENA (my favorite)
