yeah that was the 3d thing i referred to, spock killed that idea.
nu-chess wouldnt alter chess though, there would just be more options and there would still be the "old skool" chess.

another idea is that, a bit like a card game, if you got your men into a cetrain configuration, you would "score". maybe a score would allow you to remove one of your opponents men......or knock 10 points off his rating......??

There is chess with different starting positions for the back row selected randomly. I don't know if that is quite what you mean but I guess that could be nu-chess.

I guess you could try searching around a bit for chess varients if you are interested. I think there are loads.

I remember an old electronic game called Star Chess or something like that. Pieces moved and could take as in traditional chess but each piece could also shoot at the same squares they could move to and destroy pieces. I think each piece had a limited number of shields and shots depending on the chess value of that piece.

Added an interesting twist to the game. The limited number of shots you had (I think pawns only had one shot and one shield) still enabled it to retain much of gameplay of traditional chess.

EDIT: I just found this link to the console. Seems the game had more features than I remembered. I had one of these consoles and I wish I still did 🙂

There's a giant chess board you can buy that has 4 sets of pieces instead of just 2. Each player picks a side of the board to play from. I saw it at a store. It looked pretty crazy.

Chess will never be the same! Knightmare Chess is chess played with cards - and what cards! Each card breaks the rules in a wild and unpredictable way, giving the game more twists and turns than a roller coaster. A translation of the popular French game Tempete sur l'Echequier by Pierre Clequin and Bruno Faidutti, Knightmare Chess has 80 big, beautiful cards - each with an individual color painting by Brazilian artist Rogerio Vilela.
Some Knightmare Chess cards affect a single move, while some change the entire game! Each card is assigned a point value, so you can build custom decks based on an agreed point total, or handicap the match so the better player has fewer powerful cards. The possibilities are endless - and so is the fun!

When you are about to capture a piece, you need to play RPS against your opponent. If he beats you, then the piece stays, if he loses, then the piece goes.

Brutal!
