It's already lights out, know what I'm say'n?

NY needs to quit spending money on big names with zero production, that's not how they used to win.

BTW, this is an MLB thread, not Hockey if you were wondering.

Not sure if you just wandered in by mistake.

Yeah. It's a shame that the season has to end in the middle of May. If only there were still 130 games left, I'm sure they'd have plenty of time to turn it around.

Oh well.

The problem isn't the bats. The team ERA is the worst in the Major Leagues. They need better pitching.

They need better hitting too.

They're playing terribly right now and look like a bad team.

However, anyone who seriously thinks that it's "over" after 32 games (not that I think you really do, Philabibit) hasn't seen very much baseball in his life. Teams that look awful in May turn it on and have great seasons. Happens all the time.

Yankees have always spent a lot of money -- and its been a key part of all their championships since the free agent era began in the 1970s, and they've been contenders in almost every season during this period (not counting the four bad years in the early 90s when George was in exile due to the Winfield issue).

One problem is that these newly signed players almost always get off to bad starts -- Texeira, Burnett, and Sabathia have all continued this trend. You've just signed a monster contract - you're coming to New York - you're playing for the Yankees - the expectations are enormous - you want to show everyone that you're worth the money - and you end up trying too hard.

Another problem with the big contracts is that you end up with an older team with lots of veterans -- so while you have a lot of players with a track record of success -- these are also players who are on the back side of their career and players who are likelier to get hurt and stay hurt longer.

But teams that go with youth face the opposite problem -- you have a lot of players who haven't yet shown they can play at a high level -- or they've only done so for a short period of time. While its fun when these teams succeed like Tampa Bay did last year, more often than not, these teams don't do well.
