I always really hated that song 24 hours from Tulsa.
I heard it when I was a young and impressionable lad, and I thought "what sort of Prick would do that? And then ring up his chick and tell her by singing down the phone at her"
Obviously, now that I'm older, I realise that it's just a song. No guy in that situation would bother phoning to say he wasn't coming home. He quite rightly assume that she'd get the message when he hadn't showed up for a few years.
Still, the whole thing seems a bit heartless, even to me. The guy must've been a tad unreliable. I mean, let's say he was just popping down the corner shop for some tabs (this would be the English version of the song, naturally).
"Oh I was only, 24 seconds from driveway
Just half a minute from gettting a can of lager handed to me from your arrrrrms
I just saw this girl on the street
And I pulled up and said "Hi Love, I'm a random guy in a car, d'ya fancy copping of with me ........
And she said OK
Which surprised me a little
But I hate to do this to you
But I've forgotten your name
And the names of the kids
So what can I dooooo ???"
Yeah, fair enough mate. Obviously you were powerless, and it could've happened to anyone. But that's what I never understood about the song. Were we supposed to feel some sympathy for this guy or what?
Oh well, it's not as bad as "I've never been to me" I suppose, so there's always that.
