Not if I have anything to do with it, why the hell should Londoners foot the bill for a ntaional event? 😠

Are you nuts? The massive investment into the infrastructure of the capital that such an event would bring would be excellent for London's economy and London's future.

Oh I see, you actually think we'll get it don't you. 🙂

The Dome was an enormous waste of money, vastly over-budget and now stands empty and expensive. The money we have to invest in the olympics will rise beyond originaly amounts set out for it and we will have to foot the bill, then when the bid fails because a)Britain is hardly overly popular on a world stage at the moment b)The building does not meet planned requirements c)The olympic committee is at each others throats and has no unified focus and d)The transport system will never make the grade, we are left out of pocket and London has a whole load more domes sitting around collecting dust.

Don't get me wrong I would love to have the olympics in Britain, just not at the expense of London alone and I don't think we can handle it anyway.

I agree - there is no way London should get the Olympics. It's over-populated, the transport infrastructure is a mess, and it's already heavily financed by the rest of the country, even though it is expensively inaccessilble to the rest of the country. Even though I am from Leeds, and would love to have the facilites of Olympic standard in Leeds (step forward the supposedly Olympic standard swimming pool in Leeds which was built slightly too short....) I personally think that any games should be held in the exact middle of the U.K.
Which I think is.... according to the BBC website:

"Brennand Farm, about seven kilometres north-west of Dunsop Bridge.(nr Blackburn, I think)

On the exact point - grid reference SD 64188.3 56541.43 - there is no monument or sign. It is just an undistinguished clump of grass surrounded by peat bog."

This would be fair to everyone in the U.K..........

I think it should be nearer the centre of England - to allow for the population weighting of the S.E.

Birmingham has an international airport, is a hub for trunk roads which head to all corners of the island, and has masses of small island cities/towns locally to accomodate the athletes.

Just like with the national stadium though, the planners forget quickly that there is a nation outside of London (both in terms of ability to host events and need for local infrastructure development), and London quickly becomes the only option.

OK mate. First off - we certainly will not get the Olympics if we do not bid for it. Of course that carries a cost and bears a risk.

Second - whether London is a suitable venue for the Olympics has got nothing to do with the Dome, but I assume you are not bitching about the Jubilee line extension, which came about partly as a result of the Dome being built and has been excellent for Greenwich and the surrounding area.

Third - capital expenditure on the London infrastructure would be no bad thing. By your own argument you admit that our transport system sorely needs further investment. This would be good for London as a whole.

Fourth - the proposals for the Olympics would mainly see this investment being spent in east London in some of the most deprived areas not just of London but of the country as a whole. In my book helping the economy of disadvantaged inner city areas can only be good for our society.

Fifth - the international profile of the UK does need some repair work after the meaningless war in Iraq etc. A successful Olympics bid would only help in this regard.

Support the Bid! 😉
