Since i am utterly broke, want to recover from too much drinking for too long a time and generally want to live the life of a hermit, what is a good PC game for online gaming.

I like adventure games and some roleplaying games. I do have to work so can't dedicate my entire life to the game.

Any suggestions on what I should get.

PS: I am completely new to online gaming, apart from a few bouts of BFME where i got thrashed each time.

Battlefield 2.

Not an adventure game, but easily the most impressive online game I have ever played. It isn't really a 'beginners' game though, as playing it online can be like being thrown to the wolves if you don't know your MP-5 from a pointy stick.

Go get the online demo though, and try that (for free!)

(A footnote to my recommendation, I like military themed games, and hate anything with a whiff of fairies & pixies in it.)

(And as for BFME, I will take you up on that previous offer of a game once the latest patch is available (soon) which fixes a lot of balancing issues.)

Well, the first problem is that you can't dedicate your life. This is a fundamental flaw in many a newcomer to the world of online gaming. Online gaming has come a long way in the past few years. Sure you set out like that, with the intention of playing a couple of hours here and there, but soon enough you are going to bed late, getting up early to fit a couple of extra hours in, or maybe nipping home in your lunch break, putting off meeting your friends, or doing the shopping. Before you know it you'll be utterly addicted, able to sleep for only 3 hours a night and quite capable of only going to the toilet once in any 36 hour period. It is a long and winding road, so prepare yourself.

That in mind, it really depends what aspect of online gaming you are after. If you are just after the simple, quick play of a group shoot em up where you don't really get to know other people in the course of the game, I reccomend Star Wars Battlefront II, which is free to play online after you have purchased the game itself (£35 approx but will probably go down in a few months time), or Rome Total War.

If however you like to have a character which will have a 'life' in the gmaing world and people will get to know you through the actions of your character, I suggest something like Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft or Everquest II. BE WARNED, these games require a certain level of immersion to get the most enjoyment and will hook you utterly for a long period of time. It is also worth knowing that there is a great deal of game knowledge required, both generically about how online games work, and specifically with regards to your chosen game. Until you acquire this knowledge (manuals are notoriously useless) you will ask silly questions and be ignored be a lot of self righteous veteran players. I always made it a maxim to help newbies but there is a trend for snobbery in many.

If you fancy a complete life recreation game then something like Sims online, or There.com might be more up your street; places where you create your life, house, job, friends etc. in whatever way you desire.

The benefits of online gaming are the community aspects, the immagination, the escapism and blowing up aliens/monsters/criminals. The cons are reduced social capacity, limited possibility for sex and poor posture. Either play and expect to become hopelessly addicted, or stay well away.

Not quite what you're looking for, but free, well put together and an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours.

Battlefield 1942 was probably my favourite game ever, but unfortunately BF2 isn't compatible with Windows 2K.

I think Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory is a free, complete multiplayer game.

These sorts of things seem really rather odd to me, why play a game where you get to enjoy a virtual life over going out and enjoying life.

I think a good introduction to online gaming would be something along the lines of City of Heroes, or its alter-ego, City of Villains. It's fairly simplistic compared to the likes of EQ II and such, meaning you can play for any amount of time you have open, from a half hour to all day if you like. It doesn't require tons of research or knowledge of any other online gaming, and it's simple and easy to play because you don't have to acquire the best gear available in game in order to be equal to the veterans, in fact, there is no "gear" to acquire, per se.

The major drawback to it that I see, is that it does cost $15 a month to play, but that will get you access to City of Heroes and City of Villains both, after you buy one or both. I play CoH and CoV both under the global name of Suzianne (go figure), so look me up if you come aboard...

I would advise against WoW as i have know people who have owned it they go through a transformation. The first stage is they seem to talk about swords and magic books all the time next they start to get pale and there skin starts to go see through. Next it becomes rarer to hear them talking about anything but WoW. After this, who knows they are never seen again or spoken to offline i have lost one person to it. As far as i can tell to some people its addictive as cocane.
