What is the story here? Players ranked below 1200 are restricting an open invite to those between 1700 and 2500. Is this just delusions of grandeur?

three possible stories:

The first such challenge was I believe a joke. You are meant to laugh.

A second reason may be that should a very fine player turn up, they may not have the desire to play out X 'low-ranking' games to reach the level they believe they are at. Can't say I've too much time for that approach but it is a feasible cause for the question posted.

The third is in a form a cheat: while provisional, your score is an average of the scores of the opponents you play (adjusted by win/draw/loss). Even loosing to high ranked players will bring your provisional score right up.

I'd go for joke with the current crop of high-rank only challenges. There are challenges from players who aren't provisional and are still sub-1300 so are unlikely to be elite.

Delusions of adequacy might be more accurate. Perhaps they hope to win by timeout?
