Just thought I'd run this to make sure my defence is up to the job... It's found 28 spyware items (so far) that Spybot S&D & AdAware don't find.
Is it:
a) A sales pitch to make me buy their product to clear low risk threats.
b) Time to get a new spy/malware finder
c) something different?
I reckon HiJackThis might be worth a pop too - anyone used that before?
Originally posted by rhbI've only used pandasoftware once. It came as part of a bundle of programs aka system mechanic. This was a cracked version and it completely screwed my system up. When I tried to remove it, parts of it were left in there and it wouldn't uninstall poperly. To make matters worse, the remnants of panda AV that were left in there kept shouting things at me in Spanish.

Anyway that's enough of my problems. I have used hijack this, and have found it quite successful at removing things that shouldn't be there. It isn't as black and white as adaware or S + D though. It doesn't tell you definate problems on your PC, rather it just tells you changes made to the registry and the likes, which maybe perfectly legitimate programs and shortcuts that you have knowingly installed.
Just make sure you read up on hijack this well before you go zapping things with it.
It does, however, give you the opportunity to back up your registry, before you go blitzing it, so make sure you do that first, and then you can go back to where you started.
Have fun.

They both fall into catagory a). Only thing they're good for is telling you that your Cache and Cookies list need emptying.
If you're going to use any online scanner than Trend Micro is about the best around. It's much the same as Panda though on the marketing scam side of things.
HijackThis is definately worth getting but it's a lot more effort than the other Malware removers. As jimslyp69 said it literally shows you ALL the processes running on your PC at the moment, so if you don't know what should and shouldn't be there than it can be next to useless. But if you are a bit of a nerd and know about your OS and running processes than it's pretty much a godsend.
There used to be a fair few forums that had special Hijack this experts to help you with the program. You'd basically post a copy of your processes and they'd tell you what to fix to sort your problem, but the demand got to high for them to handle so they closed most of them. Best advice is to find and befriend a Hijack this expert... then exploit him!
Originally posted by jimslyp69Hmmm.. your experience of PS isn't filling me with confidence, this panda software was a 'remote' scan using a small active-x control, the report at the end showed a singel virus in my hotmail (in a .zip I hadn't opened thankfully) and 28 ad-based tracking cookies, which I'm surprised the Spybot S&D and Adaware don't find. I don't think I'll get any further gip from pandasoftware though - seems pretty legit.

HiJackThis is fun - just downloaded and had a scan and a look at the log tends to suggest nothing untowards, anything I didn't recognise is quickly explained via google (graphics card related stuff and the like). Fingers crossed all is ok at the moment.
Ta for posting a rpely to my questions... ๐

Did no-one have the commercial sense to exploit this demand?

As for the analysis of HijackThis log files, there are still plenty of web sites that will help you for free with the log.
[If anyone needs a link to some of the good ones, let me know.]
The Panda I had a few years ago also turned Spanish for some unknown reason - bleedin' nuisance that was. [got rid of - now use AVG]
I think, but could be wrong, that http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/housecall/housecall_pre.php [euro site] is the only free online virus scanner that works with other browsers than IE.
Try this out if you want to help keep spyware from getting on your system to begin with. It helps.
