Why don't they have parachuettes on commercial airplanes? My seat can be used as a floatation device? A freakin floatation device? Are you joking? All of the safety features on airplanes address might happen after you fall out of the sky. How hard would it be to turn my seat into a parachuette instead?

Actually, that kind of technology is in the works. There are already parachutes, (are you french? kind of interesting spelling there!)
anyway, they are installing parachutes in single engine planes like Cessana's and piper cubs, the little ones. They are working on the big planes now. Problem is the big ones are so dam BIG and massive a parachute has to be made out of some incredibly strong rope so it doesn't just come apart when opening. Imagine a parachute that can save a frigging passenger jet? Hundreds of thousands of pounds of screaming metal coming straight down with no engines or whatever?
Tall order.

parachutes on aeroplanes is a good idea. Next time a stewardess wakes me from my slumber to try to give me earphones to watch a crap in flight movie I will reply
"That film is so bad, I'd prefer a parachute to earphones"

A parachute would be useless in the event of an airplane crashing. Imagine just trying to stand, much less open the door to exit the plane due to inertia of the plane spinning. Even if everyone had a chute on and the plane burst open could you imagine falling freefall at 30,000 feet with just a shirt on. You would freeze to death in minutes not to mention blacking out due to lack of oxygen. To jump out at that altitude you have to be dressed for it, have an oxygen supply i.e. tank to breath, and de-pressurize the plane prior to exiting.

Slim Jim is right on this one. Most lost distance airliners are above 18,000 feet for cruising altitude in the U.S. If something catastrophic were to happen at that altitude, you would most likely pass out due to the sudden change in air pressure, lack of oxygen and extreme temperature (current temp at 18,000 feet above the airport here is -29 C).

On the bright side, if you loose engines at that altitude, the chances of gliding to an airport are very good.

Paraglider in Oz just survived after being taken to 9600m for approximately 1 hour (think she accidently entered a storm cell). She had no oxygen or special clothing and survived......

Agree its unlikely though.

That's one fortunate lady. I should get her to pick my lottery numbers.

She was pretty lucky to make it. It probably helped that she passed out also.

In the event of an emergency, I don't think the average person would be able to strap a parachute on in a timely manner and operate it correctly.
If the plane is still in one piece, you're better off to keep strapped in your seat belt and make the best landing possible.

They are not financially viable as far as airlines are concerned.
