WHilst mullin through my childhood stamp collection, I came across a penny black. i was wondering how to determine how much the little fella is worth. Judging by ebay and stamp collectors catalogues, it could be worth anything from £5 to £50,000. What distinguishing features determine the value of this small treasure?

Originally posted by BobskiWell it's got A B B A from the top left down to bottom right. It is discoloured, although I though any stamp of that age would go a bit brown. It has a great big black splodge of a stamp right on the queen's face and slight wear round the edges. Other thsan that it is very neat and uncreased. How much will ya offer me for it Bobski? 🙄

Also you will need to identify what plate number it comes from as this will have a bearing on value.
The black splodge you describe is probably a Maltese cross cancellation.
It is unlikely your stamp will be worth more than a years subscription to RHP based on how you describe its condition.
http://www.qvpennies.com/1d_Blacks/1d_blacks.htm will give you more info and pictures to allow you to compare your stamp to what the dealers sell!

But seriously, yes I know it's probably worth a fiver, but it would be nice to know. It's a penny red btw and not a penny black. See above.
Cheers.

A lot of this type (16,000,000) were printed but some of the plates only produced a few stamps before the plate was scrapped.
Is this number in the loops in the squiggly pattern around the edge?
Another thing you can look at is the water mark. Shine a torch though it.

EDIT: think I've found it. Looks like a king on a classic chess board diagram.

Fingers crossed it's a number 77 (£80000ish).
Best he can hope for is a Plate 225.
