I'm not over 30 (I'm 24) but I noticed back in high school that a lot of people didn't play chess. They even referred to the knight as the "horsey". In college, there wasn't even a chess club but a club for everything else.

I'm from western PA but it does seem to be a disappearing game.

My school's chess club right now is dull, about 4 of us. We're only running it because the rest of the school has 99 kids, so 4 isn't that bad. 😞

In the late 70's and early 80's there was no chess club as such in my school, and the school chose some of us who could play a bit for school competitions. The cheap plastic sets were available to borrow from the library for those who wanted.
I think it was played at home more as that was pre home computers and to us a video player was something only the lucky few had then. (Betamax)
Teach your family and friends as its a good way to spend time and share laughs with them.

she . . .

and she doesn't really play, she does enjoys watching and sometimes tosses a game to anyone who isn't playing. I'm guessing her rating would be 700, the second best player in the club is about 1100, and the best chess player in CHS would be ranked 1311.

4 out of 99 is good. My senior year I went to a few chess club meetings. Never joined, but sat in and played a few games. We had 4 people in the club too. Except my school had 2,500 kids. Your ratio is slightly better.

There is no doubt that Fischer made chess more 'fashionable' and there was a huge take up of the game after he won the title. Then when home computers became normal there was another advancement - you can always find someone to play, whenever, wherever. Worldwide it must be at it's most popular ever right now by far.

in my school the chess club varied between about 10 members and a good 30 or 40. but most just wanted somewhere to eat their lunch or to take the piss, there weren't that many people who (or, indeed, would) actually play.

there wasn't a chess club at my uni last year, but there was one set up in about january. i've joined, but haven't been to a meeting yet. we meed in a pub. classy.

Chess is big here in cleveland i can always go to a park and get a good game or join one of the many chess clubs here. I also get a few games in at the boarders book stores.

chess was played by the youth of the USSR much more than by the youth of the USA or Western Europe. But where is the USSR today? enthusiasm for chess among a country's youth is a sure sign the country's political system is about to crumble...
