I'm 40. In my younger days (primary school) there were a lot of school chess clubs. I actually was the leader of one of them.
We could easily gather 30-40 young players (out of 500 pupils) twice a week! Today school chess is sadly enough suffering heavily in Denmark.
As others have mentioned in this thread, there are so many more offers for young people now ective situations very closely and act accordingly to ensure new generations of chess players.
I'm 48 and learnt to play when I was 9 (although I stopped when I was 13 and didn't play again until a few years ago) because ALL the other kids were playing in my class (I was actually the last to learn). Currently my town team (which I play for, Dorking) struggles to get players because we have no junior section, we are about to go into a local school and help them with tactical thinking/opening advice etc. but there is definately nowhere near the interest that existed back in my school days, maybe I was just lucky that we all seemed to like chess at the same time.
