It should be written with the Greek letters phi and theta. That would make it three letters shorter and much more readable.

It's descriptive. Change "phenol" and you ruin the word. I don't know what "phthalein" means though.

Phthalein also apparently describes something - a phenyl ring attached to a 5 membered ring with an ester group incorporated in the 5 membered ring.
