Howdy folks.
On the weekend of April 11/12/13 I hope to be whisking away a certain female companion of mine as part of her surprise 21st birthday present/celebration. Due to a number of constraining factors, not least of which is time but in the main that rather odious realisation that funds are of a severely limited nature, my original thought was that we would go for a day trip to London, possibly take in a particular play that's on at the moment in the West End.
However, in light of recent fortuitous happenings (ie I've got a job - no really, I have - and also some unexpected money swimming my way) I am in the altogether pleasurable position of being able to cast my eye further afield, I mean to say, to look beyond the shores of the island of Great Britain, upon which I dwell. So, le continent beckons. More specifically, a large city.
Having studied the form book, I have whittled a list of not inconsiderable length down to a rather fruity select few. Namely Rome, Venice, Prague, and Paris, with Dublin or somewhere further south in Ireland being very much the outsider in a strong field, but a runner all the same.
I should say at this juncture that based upon the preferences that I have subtly elicited without giving the game away... ("So, speaking hypothetically of course, and just out of sheer interest y'know, where, y'know, I mean which, which city would you like to visit, in Europe y'know, if it was just for 2 or 3 days, like?" I asked. Pretty dashed smooth all things considered) ...of the birthday girl, Rome and Prague are the early favourites (mainly because she said "Umm, maybe Rome" and I've always wanted to go to Prague).
Should anyone put forward a word or two of experience or advice regarding any of the cities mentioned, or indeed feel compelled to suggest alternatives (Madrid?), I would, indeed, be very grateful.

all I would say is that if you fly on a budget airline ensure the airport is not 50 miles from the town you are going!!
You can go on Ryan Air to Malmo then its about 45 mins into Copenhagen (I prefer Aarhus as a town). The Eurostar to Brussels is a good bet also. Prague is now expensive and full of Americans. I have been told Northern Italy is very nice, although I have not been myself.
This time of year though I personally would prompt for one of the Spanish cities for a weekend, there are plently of flights to Parma, Madrid or Barcelona. Or, if you have a little longer the Algalve is really nice. My good lady and me got a 4 star hotel and flights for u180 each for a week this time last year with JMC.

the offer I made earlier is still open. If you want to go to anywhere n Belgium you can fly Ryan Air (cheap!) into Charelois from Liverpool or Stanstead & I'll drive you wherever you need to go. Provided I'm in the country (exactly when is the 11/12/13?)
As for where I can't help. I like both Ghent & Bruges - very chilled. Ii was in Paris last weekend, and it was very nice, but I didn't think it was romantic like people say.
She's a lucky gal,

Wow, what a choice. I've heard that Prague is quite beautiful.
But of all the large cities I've ever been to, Rome is my favorite, and April sounds like a lovely time to go.
According to my wife, Rome is very romantic (appropriately enough, since that's where the word "romantic" comes from). But she's been to Prague too, and she said it was magical.
I'd say that you'd find more medieval architecture in Prague, whereas Rome is more Renaissance and Baroque (and of course classical).
Really, I don't think you could go wrong with either of them.
