Well, as there have been rather a lot of 'self-important' contentious discussion threads around of late, here's a pointless one instead:
Is it good manners to 'ping' your own thread?
That is, for the thread creator to post the odd irrelevant comment to there own thread so that it appears back on the most recent thread list?
Discuss.

as a rule I don't like the idea of someone bumping their issue to the top of the pile. Forums have a kind of natural selection, where the threads that are generating themost interest stay on top.
But there are exceptions where bumping is OK (IMHO) such as when a thread is new and has been knocked off paghe 1 before it has time to generate interest. Or if a thread died but a new turn of events has made it relevent again. So (again IMHO) I thnk there are times when it's perfectly acceptable, depending on the bumpers motives.

So you can't say you don't like it because of this 'natural selection' and at the same time say you condone it so it can generate interest artificially. 🙄.

Anyway, I think you shouldn't do it, because it shows you think your thread is better than the rest, and it should deserve more attention than the others. Of course, this is not the case, as all threads are equal and blablabla...

I thought it was called "Gravedigging".
I don't generally like bumping, but if you are adding something useful to the post, that's fair enough. It doesn't take long for thread to drop to the second page, so if they do so it doesn't mean they're 'dead'. But if a thread has had no interesting posts added in a week or so (eg it has degenerated into flaming, people are just bumping it, or it's been completely left alone), it's best to let it die unless it's something you'd otherwise start a new thread on.
The rules are different in Posers & Puzzles: if no-one posts, it could be because lots of people are trying it, but they've been unable to work out the answer; also the rate of traffic is much lower there than in the General forum. So I'd say it's fine to bump an unsolved puzzle by adding a hint, for example.
