Playstation 3 compatibility with PS2

Recently i have been seriously looking at getting a playstation 3 seeing as prices of them are quite low at the moment and my PS2 is getting a bit ropey. But i still have a burning question about it that sale assistants in electrical stores seem to be able to dodge as well as politicians do; Can the PS3 play any/all/some PS2 games??? Please help I dont want to not be able to play my library of about 50 plus PS2 games when I trade my PS2 in for a PS3.

I would discourage such a relationship in the strongest possible terms. On no account should they be left in the same room together. You might consider sending them on separate PlayStation reeducation camps.

Sorry! I got a bit carried away... 😳

It's a very emotional topic for me. My mother DIED from Playstation 3 backwards compatibility issues. If only those heartless bastards at Sony would have released the PS2 emulation software sooner.

I would like to have playstation 3 but my wallet isn't compactible at the moment. 🙁

Correct

I have the 60 GB version but find that early PS 2 games do not work

My main worry is final fantasy X, an older game that I dont want to lose insane amounts of hard work on. However most shops in the UK seem to sell the 40GB model so is that useless to my needs?
