Absolutely no contest. Playstation 3 every time.
Apart from the PS3 being far easier on the eye in design, the built in Blu-ray player is a real bonus (the X Box HD drive is an optional extra). Many games are available on both formats and so there is little to choose from in this regard. The Playstation network makes downloading demos and extras really easy - wireless networking is troublefree too. Plus it is a really good music, video and photo player.
Finally, the best thing about the PS3 is that it isn't made by Microsoft.

PS3 is for 30-something hipsters who hide their shame behind the blu-ray thing and the coolness of the thing. You know, after all, you can hide the games and say: "oh I just watch movies, and it looks cool you know."
Real gamers pick the X. Regardless of age and level of social skills.
There is no contest IMHO - PS3 wins on so many points I wont even begin to list them.
Originally posted by MCAAs said, PS3 has its own niche: aging hipsters who need to cover their gaming addiction with peripheral issues which are more acceptable to other 30 and 40 somethings.

Purely gaming-wise: quality is the same and there are more titles in xbox.
I prefer the Xbox, but I'm a Halo fan so I really never had a choice. I've never owned a PS3 or used the Sony Network, but Xbox Live is a pretty nice part of the 360 experience.
Once thing to consider when making the choice is build quality of the respective units. The 360 has been plagued since launch with thermal design issues resulting in RROD in many units. Things have improved over time (CPU die shrink, GPU die shrink, etc) but my understanding is that the problems have not been completely solved. I've been lucky and only had one RROD exchange, but I also don't use my 'box all that often these days. In my small circle of gaming friends, we have 6 XBoxes and have had 3 go back for RROD. MS does a nice job of covering RRODs (zero cost exchange, 1 week turnaround, 3 year coverage), but that doesn't excuse the fact that it happens at all.
As I'm completely neutral in the console war I can offer you an unbiased perspective.
As you may have already picked up, if you paid attention, it's all about which games you want to play, so make your choice in that department first and then buy a console. The xbox is definitely more popular out of the two, so there are a lot more games on offer, but they have a tendency to break after about two years, though I have it on good authority that Microsoft replace the broken ones very very quickly. So, based on that, if someone held a gun to my head and forced me to choose, I'd pick an xbox.

lol, noob, rofl, pwnd. Real gamers play on the PC. It's so funny when a console n00b logs on to one of my cod4 servers, the other day some guy let slip that he was on level 4 prestige (a level of experience the game gives to console players only). I swear I've never killed a guy so many times in a single round on such a large map. Total n00b.

Games run. No need to upgrade hardware.
You can play movies (DVD and files) and games.
Socially its easier than having all your mates lug around their computers to enjoy a weekend of gaming at home and you can also connect online and play friends from around the world.
Like the PC there are a wide variety of games you can choose from.
PC:
Keyboard and Mouse allow ultimate control. - Something that you will adjust to playing on console.
Games are cheaper - Hardware isn't. Size of monitor, sound system, ram, processor... All these things contribute to how your machine will handle a game and how much you are willing to spend on upgrading your machine to play it.
Each platform has its own experience and appeal, stop trying to make it an elitist thing. (Unbiased opinion PFFFF).
Anyway how do you define a "real" gamer? Why is the PC user "better" than the console user?

Plus we have rts games. And don't talk to me about Halo Wars, rts on consoles are laughable, and fps console games do not even compare to fps pc games.

And you commented on me not being unbiased... when it comes to deciding which console to choose, yes I am unbiased, because I am not a console gamer, therefore I do not fall into either fanboy category, yet am educated on the subject enough to offer an opinion.
