We are having a poker night in a few days and I wanted to know peoples' views on their favourite versions of the game.

I am Texas Hold'em man myself, as the open cards can give an indication what the other players are going for, and so make the betting tougher.

I am very interested in the merits of the other versions.

Texas Holdem is the best version, but Omaha is quite cool too.

Strip could be good if everyone is game for it 😉

Hold'Em is the way to go. Get the rules written down and give a copy to each player beforehand - this way there can be no arguments.

Set a bet/pot limit if you don't want peoples losses to get out of hand.

Try to avoid letting people drink too much as all sense of rational behaviour can be lost (I've seen it first hand) even amongst friends.

Despite this, it is still possible to have fun, and more likely to be so if you follow the above advice. 🙂

Omaha is too complicated! Especially when you play 8 low aswell.

My are

1. No limit Holdem .
2. Omaha (none of this high low business).
3. Seven card stud (none of this high low business).

Hold 'em is for dilletantes. The real game is seven-card stud. I live near Atlantic City, and did quite well for myself while in college. Then Rounders came out and ruined the game. Now every punk with a hoodie and a pair of sunglasses thinks he can play the game.
Surely that's a good thing though if a load of mugs that can't play but think they can are going to loss their cash to you

Omaha Hi-Lo and Omaha. More mathematics involved in Omaha than in Hold-Em.

Show up to an Omaha table with intermediate players, and if you know the math principles behind it, you will destroy them.

Well, I'll tell you what. Two things happened, and I don't play down there anymore. The rooms in AC changed, and I went from disliking most of my opponents to wanting to beat the crap out of them. The big thing that happened was I started to get sucked into the life and I had to get out. But yes - there's money to be made. The problem is that with ...[text shortened]... you see jumping around on TV? Well, they do it in AC, but it's for like forty dollars.
I don't play myself but I think I see what you mean, so although in the long run you would win, you need to bankroll it to last out until the long run has ran its course?

Seven card stud, Chicago style. Best when played with 5 - 7 players.

My favourite twist is to play seven-card stud with the provision that at least one player must have a pair showing to open the game. Makes for big pots and great fun.

I just learned Hold'em about 3 months ago while being delayed with friends for 5 hours at Glasgow Airport. I'm hooked !! Been looking for a book to learn more about strategies, odds, etc. Once I'm confident, I'll be having Poker nights.

Only point of contention between my friends is the exact way of doing things, how many cards go to the bottom before each deal, what are the 'blinds' , who can check (what does this mean anyway?), etc, etc. Anyone care to enlighten me ?

You have a book on Texas Hold 'Em strategies and odds yet you don't know how the betting works. Interesting.

Nope he said "He has been looking for a book".

Easiest way to learn the rules & how it works in terms of blinds is go online.
You will soon figure out how it works.

www.888.com has an section where you are given a bank roll of fake money and you can play without having to touch your hard earned £££/$$$ etc.
(i am sure the other sites will have something similar)

When you get confident then you can go for the real money play.

As for strategies, tonnes of stuff on the internet.
