Easiest way to learn the rules & how it works in terms of blinds is go online.
You will soon figure out how it works.
www.888.com has an section where you are given a bank roll of fake money and you can play without having to touch your hard earned £££/$$$ etc.

As for strategies, tonnes of stuff on the internet.

It's easier to play against good players than bad players. That's what I'm saying. One or two bad players at the table is a feeding frenzy. But a table full of nubs - one of them is guaranteed to try and draw out on you every time. You can play with trips all the way to the river, but the moron had an inside straight draw, four cards in the deck mak ...[text shortened]... derclass, everything would be fine. But I'm not, so I avoid the temptation altogether.

We are having a poker night in a few days and I wanted to know peoples' views on their favourite versions of the game.
I am Texas Hold'em man myself, as the open cards can give an indication what the other players are going for, and so make the betting tougher.
I am very interested in the merits of the other versions.
My favourites 7 card stud or Texas.

These first three cards are referred to as the flop. Betting again begins with the player to the left of the big blind, who has the option of passing the bet (checking), or betting.

After the flop, all betting starts with the first player to the left of the dealer button who has not folded. (Not to the left of the big blind)
At least that's how it works online.
Most of the online poker sites allow you to play with 'real' and 'play' money, so I recommend that anyone interested in playing try the play money games.
I have tried several sites, and my personal choice is "PokerStars.com"

I'll take a look at 888.com and see what I think.

I just looked at 888.com and it looks to me like if you want to play poker, they re-route you to Pacific Poker. Is that correct?
i clipped the following from an article in today's chesscafe.com. i am amazed at the popularity of poker and gambling. i suspected many are lured by the big pots but soon realize that poker skills takes more than reading a book. i find the comment by this GM quite telling ...
"The German GM Matthias Wahls, who last year changed his profession from chess to poker, readily admitted this, but, he went on to explain in the German magazine Schach, poker has something that chess is lacking: an abundance of amateurs with weak character and big ego who strongly over-estimate their playing strength and can be rifled by the pro’s."
