No one but Elton John could have wrote that song in as short a period as it took him to write it. He has never sang it again as he wrote it for Princess Di's death.

Please accept this as a good natured correction, in keeping with the general tone of the quiz.
You do know it is Bernie Taupin who wrote the lyrics to the vast majority of Elton's best work (including this one), Elton wrote the music?
As the Diana tribute song involved only a rewrite of lyrics, I think you owe Bernie an apology

Though I had to fact check you because I was
under the illusion that Elton had reworked the lyrics.
I'm sure Ive seen him on tv being congratulated
for the re-write and not correcting the interviewer.
Taupin wrote lyrics for Elton throughout his career
apart from a brief hiatus in the late seventies following a tiff.

That's the Elton track that always gets into my playlists. Beautiful song, perfectly matching Elton's music with Bernie's lyrics. A 'slow burner' recognition wise, not picked for any of Elton's early 'Greatest Hits' packages.
Incidentally, Taupin worked with Alice Cooper on his 'From The Inside' album in the late 70s, which is an undiscovered treasure. If any of you have Spotify or the like, check out 'The Quiet Room'. Bernie's lyrics at their best.
I am a bit of a closet Alice fan!
