I've been listening to a 4 cd collection called No thanks..which is a music review of the punk rock period. It reminds me that rock hasn't had such energy and originality since.

From Final Solution (pere ubu) to Personality Crisis (NY Dolls) punk rock was about passion, an answer to the boredom that existed at the time, and a true sense of irony and humor.

So I tip my hat to the punk rockers...I don't mind slipping in alittle Richard Hell and the Voidoids or The Germs in between a Miles or Trane section to this day.

I hated Punk when it first started getting popular - but I soon got to love it.

Nowadays I hate RAP but I'm 100% certain I'll never get to like that crap.

I don't like hardly any music which needs a drum set in it for percussion.

Some jazz is an exception. But I am tired and have outgrown "The Beat." I think Funk, Hip Hop, Punk Rock, and Rock rhythms have outlived their welcome by about 30 years.

Don't expect huge agreement on that one.

I mean don't you get tired of THUD THUD THUD ? Every single song THUD THUD THUD THUD.

Without percussion would leave you only piano or guitar soloists as a firsthand thought. That's not a criticism on my part by the way.

When I think of all the great drummers of the past I can't see how one could outgrow it, however. What about vibes? Do they bother you as well?

Okay. You certainly are not alone.

By the way I played the stuff for a few years. I was a lead guitarist in a number of hard rock groups starting in highschool and going into college days.

But I respect that you're not bored with Rock and Roll.

It is that regular, incessant, pulsating thump which I am tired of.

Music for me simply does not HAVE to have a clearly dileneated THUMP in it to be music.

Anybody like Gustav Mahler's symphonies ?
Theolonias Monk then ?

I loved punk when I was 15/16, bought every Dead Kennedys vinyl I could get. I also really like NoMeansNo and a few other bands on the Alternative Tentacles label.

Quite right. Drums can get very loud indeed in orchestral music.

Sometimes it is a regular pulsating beat. Sometimes it is just a particularly loud drum passage.

I like Cuban, Latin, and authentic African rhythmic complexity. But the simple Rock and Funk beat has outlived its attraction for me.

When I first read your note I was led to believe that you simply disliked all percussion. And i'm sorry for making fun before (pretty much).

With all respect, I think that your making simple generalyzations (redundant?) but I don't think that you're musically naive in any way...I did about an hour ago but was wrong.

Oh that's OK. I need some making fun of.

When you get over fifty yet get to say cranky stupid stuff.
