Stumbled across two things today that I quite liked, both of which
many would have heard before, but perhaps one or two of you may
have not.
Lady Astor: Winston, if I were married to you, I'd put poison in your
coffee.
Sir Winston Churchill: If you were my wife, I'd drink it.
Second one is:
"Winston, you are drunk!" To which Churchill slurred, "Indeed, Madam,
and you are ugly -- but tomorrow I'll be sober."
Anyone have any favourite quotes/comebacks they'd like to share?

I knew not that he had said that Lyn. Thanks!
But I do have a (perhaps startling) admission to make. Russ
professing a liking for Margaret Thatcher has given me the confidence
to say I love John Major. Not him as a politician necessarily, just
*him*. I think he's a good bloke that got surrounded by a bunch
backstabbers. Perhaps. There's many people who hate him and I can
see where they're coming from. But, well, I am rather fond of him for
some reason.
So that there's a point to this post I thought I'd better throw in
another couple of quotes that are favourites of mine:
We often hear that mathematics consists mainly of "proving
theorems." Is a writer's job mainly that of "writing sentences?"
(Can't remember who said that)
Money is better than poverty, if only for financial reasons.
(Woody Allen) (There are even better Woody Allen quotes...I just
can't remember them off hand).

"I have opinions of my own- strong opinions- but I don't always agree
with them." George Bush I
"I have learned form the mistakes I may or may not have made.
When I was young and irresponsible, I was young and irresponsible."
George Bush II
"Facts are stupid things." Ronald Reagan, 1984 (Later diagnosed
with Alzheimer's disease)
Come on, that was too easy. Getting Republicans to say stupid things
is like shooting fish in a barrel. Personally, I think Reagan was born
with Alzheimer's disease.
But on a related note, I have been wondering if chess players tend to
be more conservative or more liberal than the populace at large. I am
an unapologetic bleeding heart liberal, but I think by and large chess
players tend to be more conservative. That has just been my
observation, I have no information to back that up. Anyone else have
any thoughts on the matter?
