question

why does my rating go down when I defeat someone who has a much lower (300+) rating.

It doesn't make sense to me. Can anyone explain?

Ratings are provisional until 20 rated games are completed.
Ratings may appear erratic until this time.

this appears at the bottom of your stats board. it means that until you complete 20 games your rating my go up or down regardless of your opponants rating.

Probably has something to do with your having a provisional rating.

Don't worry too much about it . This will balance out in the long haul . After 20 plus games your rating will be a fairly acurate reflection of how you've played and who you've played . Check out the ratings FAQ if you want to learn exactly how it's calculated .

It's OK. The system doesn't make sense, so you're not alone.

It actually does. I started before the new system, and would have shot right up around 1400 or 1500. Take a look at my graph, and compare to someone joined in past several months.

go down page about half way...

What is a provisionally rated player?

I just won a game. Why has my rating gone down?

How is my rating calculated?

Those are the topics you will find interesting, half way down about.

Hmmm. Confusing. I will leave it to you lot at RHP to work it out. I will have to take your word for it.😛

I used to play on another site that had a similar rating system , with slight differences . Russ and the gang here do a much better job . This system over the long run , seems far more accurate and fair , with far less fluxuation . Keep in mind it is numbers and stats , so any system is going to have inherent flaws and weaknesses . But it's true test is going to be over a larger # of games played than you've got right now , so just ignore it for now , and see what it does when you've got 50 or so games . I think you'll be satisfied with it .

Yes, it must be a very difficult thing to work out. Equating someones strategic to a number. So much happens during just one game of chess and yet there can only be 3 outcomes.

PS. How do they work out ratings in real life.
