reading yahoo news

i have been reading the news on yahoo, one thing has caught my eye. Seems they have found a patch in some basement, and may turn out to be of a child who went missing 33 years ago. But it mentioned the family sued someone who did not have anything to do with it and won $2,000,000. This made me curious, can someone who may remember WHY??
