There have been many things going on at RHP. There was the problem with harrasment, the cussing, etc. Now ther is a lot of discussion about recs. There are many people who keep talking about it in many different ways. Frankly, there's only a few things to say.
The point of the recs are to advance something. When I see people asking for recs, that makes me sad. What makes it even sadder is that then I see 7-9 recs. Look at it this way: If there are 10 pounds of gold in the world, each is worth 1000. If someone finds 90 more pounds, though, the the price drops to about 100 dollors a pound. The same with these recs. If we toss these around like that, then the price and value of these recs take a sharp drop. When I go to the reccomended posts place, I look for things that are worthwhile. I, and I'm sure many agree with me, don't want to see a post saying Rec please with 30 recs. Think of these recs as dollors. Would you give a dollor to someone saying something or to someone saying Give me money cause I want it ?
When you give a rec, think about it. Does this post say someting that ispireds people? If not, reconsider your decison. Make these recs valueful.
End of discussion.

Originally posted by abejnoodYa know I never thought of it this way. It is way too important to just “give away” valuable recommendations as if they meant nothing at all. I do get very irritated to see such flagrant abuse. It irritates me that some mundane post can get any rec’s at all! This just encourages mediocre posters to continue to think that they are “like sooo much Fonzi”!

Why not fix the total number of recs in circulation, and allow us to spend our recs on reccing other posts? That way, one only gets recs to spend by being recced, but recs are no longer some sort of badge of honour because they are designed to be lost in spending. Instead, they become both a vehicle for highlighting popular posts and encouraging good posting (since having recs gives one more influence over the 'Recommended' page). Also, hoarding one's recs does little good in theory, because as a widespread phenomenon it would bring reccing to a halt. In practice, there would be no point in doing it because there would be nothing impressive about having lots of recs -- you'd just be a hoarder, in much the same way as it's relatively pointless to carry around large quantities of cash and refuse to spend any when there is an appropriate place to spend it.
