well this site promotes rival chess ( wish you could buy it other than a
internet purchase. i would be glad to have a copy then) it has been
suggested that members with a star have for a fact computer chess,
they have a star to prove it. well at least that is honest.i dont know if
they receive any bias about it. OUR TOP PLAYERS have a star. IS this
how they got there with help from rival??? they have it!!! ah but DO
they use it. IVE had the pleasure of playing and viewing boards of
members with"stars" if they are being advised by rival i dont want a
copy.! i would get better advise from a ""book""!!!
The Pawn Star scheme was intended to raise funds to keep this site
going. (And to those that have registered, we are very grateful )
You will find that the people with better ratings enjoy the site a great
deal, and therefore choose to support it by becoming Pawn Stars.
They all tended to be highly ranked long before the Pawn Star
promotion, and Rival has been freely downloadable in shareware form
right from the start.
If you do not wish to make an internet purchase, posting a
check/cheque will be just as appreciated! (Others have done this)
BTW: I'm making good progress on the new version of Rival now, so
we will probably have an early test version available for Pawn Stars
before Xmas.

Does it matter if some people are using chess software? I play here because I don't play over the board so much these days
and I want to keep in practise. I want my opponents to play the best moves they can. I don't use any software but I do
sometimes consult my repertoire notes. This would be cheating OTB, but not in correspondance chess or on the Net. - Gutzon
It is a tricky question. If there was no rating system, it would be much
less of an issue, of course. The rating system was only introduced as
a means for people to find appropriate opponents, and in this sense,
using a computer should be ok because it would be reflected in the
rating anyway.
But my opinion is that using a computer is always wrong unless both
players are in explicit agreement to the contrary. Even then it's a little
controversial because players regularly using a computer would
dominate the top ratings. Perhaps we could add a flag that indicated
members as a computer-assisted player or a non-computer assisted
player. Just a thought.
Now that there is the option to add a personal profile on the "Your
Settings" screen, people can use this to "confess" to using a
computer - if people are going to use a computer, I'd rather people
were honest here.

Flagging the fact a player may use a computer sounds a good idea.
Why not take it a step further and oblige players to indicate whether
they will or not?
On the issue of helping players to find suitable opponents, you could
also ask people to declare any grades they have (or to give an
estimate if they can).
Meanwhile I will do a profile giving my details.
As you can see by my rating, I am not much of a chess player. I
haven't played a lot because of other priorities in my life, but I do
love the game. I purchased Rival Chess because I wanted to support
this site not to use the program to better my chance against any
opponent. I never thought about using it to determine moves, nor will
I. In fact, I can't win a game against it. I really appreciate the
gentlemen who made this site available for me and others to play
chess. It is a great site and I hope it will stay around for a long time.
Thanks to all.
The problem is not being assisted by computer, it is how to improve
your game with. I m planning to become a star but not for the program
(I have even a better one) intead for supporting the people that
make us to play chess. I pay yearly $49.00 at internet chess club and
I prefer playing here, then I think we should try to help this site that is
very very nice!!!!!!!!!!!!
What are you trying to say, exactly?
Are you saying that those who have a 'pawn star' are using the Rival
program to help us play against opponents on this site?
This is totally speculation on my part, but I suspect that most chess
players who have a computer probably have tried a chess playing
program at some time.
There are numerous freeware, shareware and commercial chess
programs available. Does this mean that anyone here who has one of
these programs uses it to help them against their opponents on this
site, or is it just the ones who have a 'pawn star'?

hello:
hmmm, how exactly would one get help from using rival?? do you
mean that they are using the actual programme to play for them??
the reason i bought " rival" and " pawnstar status" was because i
wanted to support the site...i like playing here, so why not!! it gives
me hours of enjoyment, so i did my bit. i didn't pay for this online...i
went to the bank, and got a bank note. the bank note for the $18 cost
me £13 or round about, and then there was the bank charge of £7; it
cost me roughly £21, and i don't know how much that would come
through in dollars, but, it was worth it to me; it is a small price to pay,
to ensure my chess pleasure!!
if i did however want to play a chess programme online, i would like to
notify, the oposition, if and when they come. i am currently saving to
by a computer that will run the world computer chess champion, and a
few other programmes. i would like to be able to play them against
each other, and yes, it would be good to play them online, but, my
knowledge of computers doesn't allow me to do so. i haven't figured
out how to do it yet!! the reason i am buying these, is because, i cant
find chess clubs here in n. ireland. if i buy the programmes that i
want, plus the chessbase, i can study all the games of players that i
like. plus, and competitions going on worldwide will automatically be
downloaded into chessbase. i can study games, and endless openings
listings. these things would be like my study aids.
i don't like the fact that you have accused " pawnstars" of using rival
to gain points!! hey, i will ask you this though!! do you really think
that a rating in here means anything?? it is not real!! i use the same
name in other places, and i have ratings from" 2063...1350...1800"
these ratings are not real!! it doesn't matter about the rating, as long
as you have fun, and enjoy the game...that is all that matters!! i can
say, that i am NOT using a computer to gain points!!
i like the rival programme. i like it for many reasons, but, most of all,
i like it for the other chess games it provides. these are a good
distraction, that i welcome many times during my day. i like the way
you can set it up to think between 1-8 moves ahead. i like it for many
reasons. i have a few chess programmes on my computer, and i like
each for different things.it is a very low-priced programme, plus, you
get to help out the site!! whats the problem??
