I never liked Michael Portillo when he was a Tory MP or when he served as Defence Minister. I relished that famous glimpse of him when he realized his career at Westminister had been ended by the Blair landslide in 1997. His contributions to BBC Radio 4's Moral Maze, where he articulates conservative perspectives well, and his enjoyable accounts on TV of train journeys in the UK and around the world, have rehabilitated him in my estimation.
Do you have any public figures ~ whom you once regarded with disdain ~ that, subsequently, you have rather forgiven and/or warmed to?
