Well, "danke schoen" is used if you don't have umlauts, but it's not really correct.

I always thought ae was supposed to be æ and oe was œ, in case there wasn't ä or ö available... but I guess it's not any more right than using ae, oe...

I usually use 'æ' and 'ø' when I write German because it's easier than writing 'ä' and 'ö' using the Norwegian Dvorak keyboard layout, and it's easier to read than 'ae' and 'oe' (I used to write 'ue' for 'ü' before I found out how to write an 'ü' on a Norwegian keyboard). But most times when people don't have 'ä' and 'ö', they don't have other umlauts they can use instead either.
