(yes this is a repeat of the thread in Help and Site ideas)
I've brought this up before but don't think the idea got noticed.
Would it be possible to set up a kind of Expert/Master/G.Master system on the site, similar to the one the US Chess federation use?
A possible way this could work;
Different rating banded tournaments would allow for the possiblity of players earning titles, based on their results.
Im not sure what exactly is required to earn an 'Expert' or 'master' norm under the US system, but im sure it would be a popular addition to the site, as players can earn a title specific to their standard.
It would be a mark of consistency.
eg.
RHP/GM: (2100+ to enter)
3 GM Norms required.
1 Norm= top 2 finish in GM banded Tournie.
RHP/M: (1800-2100 to enter)
3 M Norms required.
1 Norm=top 3 finish in M band Tournie.
(Seeing as Tournaments between these bands contain so many more people i think three top3 finishes is asking a lot as it is.)
RHP/Expert: (1600-1800 to enter)
3 E Norms required.
1 Norm=top 3 finish in E band Tournie.
RHP/Contender: (/-1600 to enter)
3 C Norms required.
1 Norm=top 3 finish in C band Tournie.
So, anyone think this idea is kind of groovey, hmmmm??😀
Originally posted by marinakatombThink it sounds good... I think USCF after Expert goes to A players, B players, C players (where I am) etc.... So not just one big lump of 1600 or lower players might be called Lettermen?
Perhaps Contender is not such a cool name, any suggestions or is this thread going to go down like a lead balloon??🙄
Wood Pushers? (pixel pusher as sir once said to me)
Novice?
Pawntenders?
Enthusiasts?
What we all need to do is get 2 friends each to join this site... 2 more friends I would say... Friends with money for chess, you can profile them as adictive personalities who happen to play chess. 😉
That way Russ can make mad cake and retire... and hire 20 guys to write code that he could sit and say "good" or "Bad". So many features to add, and great ideas all the time.
P-
I wasn't sure about having really low bands as anyone rated -1500 has so much room for improvment.
I was a stuggling 1200 player a year ago, had i been playing under this system i would possibly achieve a norm in one of these low bands, only to have my rating increase and force me out of those banded tournaments.
I think the point of these bands is to give players who have perhaps reached their peak rating (as we all reach a point sooner or later that requires super human effort to surpass) have something to strive for. Persuing one of these titles would raise the competitivness of the players and inevitably, raise the standard of chess on the site.😀
Originally posted by VargWell i sit somewhere between contender and expert in this system so i'd fail to achieve either.
I like it, although under your system it puts me as a contender only 😲
The other point is, the ratings on this site are apparently inflating (as FIDE ratings are, I suppose), so the boundaries may have to be assessed each year.
I think it would be nice for the people who really study their openings and things cos the time it takes to achieve a title playing OTB is immense. I joined a chess club 6 months ago and i've only played 6 games! At that rate i'd be well into my 50's before i got a chance to play Master strength players (obviously i wouldn't be able to achieve any Norms if i wasn't playing master strength opposition).
As for re-assessing the results requirred for Norms each year, i have to say im not in favour. The point of these titles isn't to mirror the 'real' thing, they are a reward to players who consistently perform well in Tournies, nothing more.
🙂
