Well, let the righteous leader of the BWA enlighten all who have not heard of this comedic genius. Pryor had a horrible life. His mother was a prostitute and he grew up in a brothel. I believe he even said that his dad ran off with his girlfriend when he was a teenager.
When you think of the Kings of Comedy, Eddie Murphy, Cedric the Entertainer, the Black Comedy Network, it really all began wit Richard Pryor. Initially presenting wholesome comedy in the vein of Bill Cosby, I guess it was inevitable that his darker comedy would emerge. He did several movies with Gene Wilder, the most famous of which was Stir Crazy. He had problems with alcohol and drugs and once set himself on fire while free-basing cocaine. After this he developed MS and spent his final years as a very frail man. He was probably the first black comic to bring profanity to the stage.
I once heard an interview with him and found him to be quite a spiritual and reflective man.

This is precisely why you should watch more TV.
Surely you must have seen one of the Richard Prior - Gene Wilder films, at least?
I looked him up on IMDB, and no, I don't think I have seen any of those films. I have seen two films with Gene Wilder, though (on DVD).

Seriously, though, you've missed out if you haven't seen Richard Pryor doing stand-up.

I am 35. But maybe the fact that I am German and have grown up without TV explains why I haven't heard about him.
Being German (from a US point-of-view) can't excuse you from not being exposed to the claptrap that passes for entertainment on US TV 😉 ...it's just an advertising medium selling consumers poisons
(And sadly, the closest thing America has to any kind of culture....😕) 200 million people on ProZac! )
Like yourself, I manage to live my life without TV :'( It think it allows us to think more clearly
