Anyone else seen this movie? A disturbing portrait of racism... reminded me of some elements of Higher Learning.
It is a disturbing look at racism in Australia. It opened many eyes. A must see film.
watched it again about a year ago. didn't even remember it had russel crowe, but I guess I didn't know him when romper stomper came out. I remember watching tetsuo at the same time, and both impressed with their crude action. great film.
'the believer' was another one that comes to mind thinking about neo-nazi movies. maybe a little better movie, but not so action oriented. and of course american history x.
How prevalent is racism in Australia and New Zealand? It is my impression that more and more both countries are becoming dependant on Asian trading partners. Is immigration that big of a deal?
In the US, while you can certainly find a significant number of racists most of them are stupid and unorganized... prone to fighting amongst themselves because they need somebody, anybody to fight... I believe this is primarily because they have small winkies.

We are trading with the asian countries as they are geographically a lot closer plus products are a lot cheaper.

It used to be that it was an Australian right to hate equeally, all other nations in the world. White, black, pink with blue polka dots, it didnt matter, we held them all in contempt. It was the basis of our humour, and our principle of "a fair go" for all, as we give everyone a chance to prove themselves worthy to be an Australian, then we passed judgement. This was a very white mind set.
Immigration was a huge affair. Since the end of WW2, it was first millions of Europeans. We had intergration problems, but 2 generations down the track, they are proud Aussies.
Then in the 1970's, we took in about 750 000 Vietnamese boat people, with initial intergration problems, again 2 generations down the track, these folks are fine Aussies.
In the 1980's onwards, the immigration focus was on the middle east. We are having intergration problems. At the moment, we can only hope that their grandkids will be proud Aussies.
I think that white Australia is having trouble coming to terms with the fact that we are a nett importer of people and we have just about bred out the old fashioned ideal of a "bronzed Aussie". We are in for interesting times.

We are multicultural and multi-racial and that will be our problem. Everyone wants to be of their own roots rather than be an Australian of whatever extraction first and foremost.
There are many suburbs in our major cities that you just do not go to if you are not of a certain ethnic type. This type of enclave building will i think lead to a "Balkanisation" of Australia in the future. Then we will be in for civil war and we will no longer be the "lucky country".
But in the meantime i am grateful i'm an Aussie, cos i've had a look around overseas and some of you people are just plain crazy!

know, Canada is full of people from all over the world,
yet they are not gun crazy nor have racial tension as much
