Does he represent 'everything that's wrong with football today' or is the media just hungry for blood?

Rooney is great, I'd say most football fans have nothing against him (beyond playing for Manchester United, that is).

Brilliant article.

The English media are notorious for being completely mental when it comes to World Cup football. Rooney's just come off an excellent season with United where he was in outstanding form and he's now dropped into a weird World Cup and hasn't quite found his feet yet. Liverpool / Man Utd rivalry aside, I'd say he's one of the best, if not the best player in the Premier League for the last season, and he has matured a hell of a lot over the last six years, both with his attitude and his game.

Can't do much alone. Also, seems like his ankle is still nagging him. When he's in form few can match him. Seems to suffer self confidence issues and gettting into it with fans is unseemly, but he is human after all. We'll see what he's made up today!
