Without knowing if Stella was a life mate like a wife, or a fond friend, or a pet.
That being said, two weeks ago, one of our cats passed away. She had been getting weak for the last month. The last week she was struggling to breathe, but seemed comfortable.
Her last night, she started coughing, then went into the kitchen, laid down and died.
I cried like a baby when I saw her, and worse when I picked her up to bury her. I cried for three days off and on. I'm crying now.
Little Miss Phoebe was close to my wife, she would occasionally hug and love others but she was momma's girl.
I know it's hard to imagine a "tough old cowboy" who is a professional butcher crying over a dead cat.
But she was family, just as much as anyone else. She was loved, and knew it.

Stella would have enjoyed the joke.

You changed your profile picture, but not the text. Doesn't look like a dog to me...

Tell me more about Stella? Somebody I should know?

Prax there is more to being a "tough old cowboy" than wearing a hat and listening to Johnny cash records.

Anyway I guess you realised that when your wifes cat died.
