I've just bought one of these but in my ignorance did not know that I cannot simply drop and drag my CDs into this without converting the format. I know this seems obvious now but it doesn't always immediately spring to the untrained mind.

Now I have this unit and about 40 CDs of music to put on it, how do I go abut doing this. I suppose I have to find the right software to convert CD to MP3 or WMA or whatever, but I wouldn't know where to start.

Alternatively, how do I go about downloading from the internet? Preferably legally.

ExactAudioCopy is good encoding software.

Any idea where I can get it from and how long it would take to install, and then how long it would take to convert, say, 20 CDs?

Windows Media Player does it as well.

Use the 'Copy from CD' option and it'll convert it into mp3's. By default they're stuck under - My Documents > My Music

Does it need to be the most recent version of Media Player?

When I tried to install the software for the MP3 player it did say I would need to upgrade, although I did think it might be an attempt to sell new software.

As far as I know it's on both Versions 10 and 9 of Media Player, no idea about earlier ones though.

If you need the latest version you can just download it for free from Microsoft's website.

As said WMP can do it for you.

WMP 10 free at Windows Update.
Go to Tools - Options - Rip Music tab.
In the Rip settings select mp3 from the drop-down menu - you can also set it here to rip the CD automatically when you insert one.
Click apply and ok.

If you haven't got WMP 10 or don't want to get it , the procedure is similar.

Windows Update [with Internet Explorer]

If you get i-tunes (which is free) then you can do this very easily. You have access to the online store where you can buy albums or single tracks at reasonable prices. Also you can manage podcasts with i-tunes. These are generally free and there are some really very good ones that are excellent for discovering new music, just find the podcast page in the music store and search for what you want.

Re: Windows Media Player. I'd keep usage of it to a minimum seeing as it is one of the biggest spyware pieces of software out there.

Only problem is not having internet access on my own PC, but thanks anyway.

You can turn all the "report back" stuff off in the options/privacy settings.

I try not to deal at all with software which tries to invade my privacy.

And me. Most software has some sort of update procedure though, fortunately you can normally turn it off.
