What does rhp mean to you? is it a site for grown up talk? is it a site for tea party chat? is it a grandmaster 'exclusivo' chess site??

or is it a site for ALL - old and young - to get together - LIKE EQUALS - whatever their status?
I joined this site a couple of years ago, ...[text shortened]... u me, so will all the other kids who DID get excluded...

anyway - say 'no' to age limit...
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! How many times I could say that for making this post! I am a child and am a human and I have the same rights as anyone! We have already discussed this issue in the forom issues place, and I recommend everyone read that thread.

I think one of the points that keeps getting missed in these discussions is that if something bad, god forbid, DID happen to a minor here, and a lawsuit ensued. This site would be gone in the blink of an eye. Gone for kids under 13. Gone for kids over 13. From what I can tell this site is a labor of love, and is not backed by some all powerful corporation which can outlast lengthy and expensive legal warfare.

If you're a parent, or a grandparent, and you're here and aware of what goes on here, then I think you can let your kid ignore the rule (and try to handle the ethical issues at home). I say this because clearly you are involved and aware of what your child is exposed to. My guess is that this new rule is set particularly to protect those parents who are not aware of what their children are doing. I think this is an important point: this rule protects all of us, kids and parents alike.

I think this is basically the same point I was making when I said Russ is protecting himself and his site. But well put oishi, you've got my rec

Fine then!!! Let all people under 13 be banned!!! And while we're at it lets just ban everyone under 18!!! Will anyone besides the kids stand up then???
You guys aren't being fair to those of us who are already here! Its not our fault you guys can't keep a decent conversation in the forums or during a game! Clean up your act but don't punish us! Maybe we should ban the adults since they seem to be the problem here! Think about it if you were in our shoes! You come on to rhp (and I know some of you are very attached to it) and you can't log on. Now how many of you would be mad as hell? How many of you would cry? And how many of you would sit there and say, "Oh well, its just a game"??? 😠

The Internet, in its current form, isn't a great place for 10 and 11-year-olds, etc. to be surfing around on unsupervised anyway, whether it be a chess site or not (and we know most of the parents aren't going to sit down right in front of the monitor with their kid the whole time). My niece is 10 and her mom just found out that she has a Yahoo mail acco ...[text shortened]... he forums 24x7, or do we officially declare this place PG-13.

I support the decision.

so it is better to ban these kids from the site than clean up our act re:usernames, posts etc? easy for you to say - you are not the one being banned. surely the answer is to try to make RHP as kid-friendly as possible, rather than just ban them from playing chess here. letting a name like 'anderilikeslittleboy' stand would send the wrong kind of message about this site. forcing a change was the right thing to do, and this thread spells out why.

Well said Rachel, I think that the main problem is caused by adults. And if the solution was as easy as to ban all the idiots, the creeps and the pervs then that would be the way forward. But to catch these sort of people out is quite difficult.
And remember Rachel, you are one of the most protected people on this site as you have a parent that participates quite frequently in his chess playing and in the forums who can keep a watchful and protecting eye over you. Other kids do not have that protection.

All I am trying to say is that Russ is trying to protect his investment here legally.

I personally wish there was a better solution to this, I really do not want to see the under 13 year olds banned (punished). I have a nephew of 11 who wants to join as I am instructing him in the fine art of chess and I was going to pay for a subscription for him. This is probably the last action I wanted to see.

But I also do not want to see Russ have any legal or moral implications that could mar the rep of this site, or even worse.

You say you want it to be kid friendly site, then you say someone who likes them is giveing the wrong message. You changed your argument in the same sentence!🙄

I would rather let my kid talk to someone who "likeslittleboys" than with someone who "dosentlikelittleboys".

I wouldn't let my kid talk to anyone either "likeslittleboys" or "doesntlikelittleboys". Both of them I would be quite wary of. There is something quite sinister in both of them statements

Why would someone broadcast that they "like little boys". I would worry about that statement.

Has anyone mentioned that the under 13s could have been allowed to play but you could have banned them from the Forums until they were 13 and also banned them from communicating and being communicated with during games?

Why bother with everything involved in making/keeping it kid-friendly? No position here, I'm just curious what your argument is.

Oishi made a very good point, put yourself in Russ's shoes........
In this way we haven't to worry about the crap we post and ,more important, Russ doesn't have to worry about the crap we post. 😉

Why make it adult entertaining? The adults are the ones who caused the problem in the first place by talking about sex, drugs, and violence not only in the forums but in games. So why not ban them? The kids didn't start the problem, YOU GUYS did.
