Body Snatchers scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. After watching it I was afraid to go to sleep.

When I was about 13, someone tapped on the window while I was watching Salems Lot.
Living in Japan in a huge old house, I was watching Sixth Sense alone when the power cut - what made it worse was that my watch beeped for midnight seconds after. 😕

For me, it's 2001: A Space Odyssey. The silence in that scene where HAL uses the pod to come after Frank Poole is chilling.
That scene was indeed quite frightening.

Anything with evil/possessed children like The Brood and Village of the Damned. Also: the Shining, Night of the Living Dead, The Blair Witch Project, The Ring (original Japanese version), Man Bites Dog (this one's more disturbing than scary).

I think Alien is pretty scary, as is the shining. I tend to find gory films disgusting rather than scary, and these two, whilst still having some gruesome bits in, do build up suspense brilliantly...

Shooting Dogs. Based on a real story.
