I've yet to meet anyone who SERIOUSLY thinks she's guilty. But there's plenty of people like my Mum out there, who believe that if the police arrest you then it's simply a matter of passing sentence, 🙂.

I actually find it hard to believe that the Indonesian prosecutors think she's guilty. I mean, they're not stupid, are they? Their angle eludes me. But I don't buy the whole "pick on the white Australian" argument either. On the other hand, the South African government tried to defend Apartheid for an awfully long time, before admitting they were wrong. Perhaps it's simply a case of that? "We make tough drug laws, and we're not wrong. No argument. Drugs are bad, m'kay?". I know chess players who think like this. A pawn is a pawn is a pawn, and must be grabbed. Brook no argument. But sometimes it's OK to be wrong. I don't think Indonesia would have sufferred a loss of face to step back this time, nor do I think it would've sent a message of leniency to drug smugglers.

I was also quite intrigued to read in the paper today about a very similar case that happened in the past. I forget the details, but I'm sure someone else could provide them. The essentials are that a Japanese tourist was arrested a few years back for exactly what Corby is being charged with. Like Corby, she denied it vociferously. Like Indonesia, Australia jailed her for a long time (ten years I believe). Like Australia, Japanese citizens were outraged, and convinced of her innocence. In retrospect, I don't know how Australia feels about this case now, or if the woman has an apology coming. Probably not. Most people are never wrong, just other people are.

Yeah, it's a total mess. No, you don't lose the plot and act like a terrorist because you feel outraged. Yes, drug addiction is bad, and exploiting the addicted is even worse. No, executing drug mules does absolutely nothing to prevent drug trade. Yes, the world can be a complicated place. No, approaching problems with an ideological or dogmatic approach doesn't fix them.

I hope Shappelle doesn't spend the best years of her life in prison. I hope this Japanese woman is treated fairly by Australia, if in fact the case against her doesn't stand up to scrutiny. I hope people, especially those in power, acknowledge that with even their best intentions, they can make mistakes. And it's OK, so long as you accept that, and try to put them right, instead of being bloody minded about it.

And that goes for me too. This whole post could well be a load of mindless tosh. At least I'm open to the possiblity, 😉.

She gets caught with 4 kilos in her bag - and her defence was she did not know anything about it?

So anyone caught smuggling drugs into Australia in their bags has only got to say " not mine mate " and Customs will let them continue on their holiday?

Yea right.

Read this. She has been found guilty by a panel of judges and been sentenced. On appeal that sentence will not stand and she will get life. She will wish that she was sentenced to die.

It's my belief that she will topp herself within a year. Good riddance.

I didn't say she hadn't been found guilty, or even that her sentence wouldn't be increased. I said that I doubted the Indonesian prosecuters really BELIEVED it.

I'm not sure what their motives are. But I'm convinced they're not ignorant. The argument that Corby's defence put forward is far more believable then that of the prosecution. I'd defy any jury in a country that has a justice system based on a presumption of innocence to convict on the case as prosecuted. In fact, if Corby's case had been decided by a jury, even on a presumption of guilt, it's unclear to me that she would've been convicted.

Although it's true that no justice system is perfect, some appear to display their imperfections with more clarity than others.

My post was deleted for whatever reason (I assume it was the barnyard language) but what I wanted to know was where skeeter's animosity for this poor (and most likely guilty) woman comes from. It's one thing to take a side in the debate but to show a complete lack of empathy is something that only a stone-cold bee eye tee see aitch could do.

Thats me. Sugar's extra. Anyway, it's not a personal animosity, it's an absolute loathing of what Corby represents. Drug runners are destroying our children and society in general and when they are caught they should be executed there and then. Thats the only way to control it. Indonesia has signalled a zero tolerance for this behaviour and rightly so. What will be the response from Australia when six of the "Bali nine" , when convicted for heroin smuggling recieve the death penalty. It is going to happen and Corby should be thankful that she was spared a firing squad.

Indonesia has drawn a line in the sand and is going to set an example. Ready-Aim-Fire will be the last words six people will hear in this life but it will not be the last word on this matter from Indonesia, be assured.
