Just ask Kurt Vonnegut. Semi-colons have no purpose.
His quote was funnier...something about a transvestite, but I forgot it.

A longer pause is needed. A full stop will do the trick. So will a rephrasing in which "but" is substituted for "however", and the comma eliminated. However, a semi-colon is often just right for the job.
