Aluminum/aluminium - It depends on how you pronounce it. The two spellings reflect two different pronunciations. I suppose I prefer the American spelling as it has one less letter and one less syllable.
What about the pronunciation of Oregano? The way I pronounce it is Oh-RAY-geh-no. How else is it pronounced?
Teaching requirements over here say we should use the sulfur variant when we refer to that one, but sulphur will not be penalised if used in an exam. Not too surprisingly, almost everyone I've encountered teaching (as well as myself), uses sulphur.
But how is this done elsewhere?
