I work for DHL,an express delivery service. They ship stuff all over the world. My job is to load the aircraftcontainers, hard work, always at night, but well paid.Sometimes we also ship organs, packed in dry ice.Last night we had a box containing 2 human hearts.Obviously, these shipments are urgent and they have the highest priority. We must also make sure that they are put on top,so that no other packages damage them.So I pick up the box, lift it above my head and......the bottom breaks! To make matters worse, one of the plastic bags containing a heart rips and the heart pops out.Somehow,in a reflex,I manage to catch it.So there I am,up to my ankles in dry ice holding someone's heart.I quickly put it on the heap of ice and covered it,but I guess it's ruined anyway.
Now maybe someone will die because they shipped his/hers new heart in a crappy box!
Sometimes I really hate my job 🙁

Sir Lot.

What did your bosses say?! Surely someone will get a kick up the bum for skimping on packaging... I'm not entirely sure that would have ruined it, though. The human body can take a bit of a knock.

Incidentally, if that had happened here during the cricket season, an inevitable cry of "Howzat!!" would have followed.

It's not the knock, but the contact. There's the risk of infection if they use that heart.

That makes sense. So is there any way the heart could still be used after SirLot saved it?

It's not the knock that ruins the heart,it's the contact with the dirty gloves we wear at work, and the dusty environment, and the fact that for some time it's not kept at the appropriate temperature..My boss said, and I quote: "***********"
None of us got yelled at though,it's the hospital who is responsible for packing it,not us.We're not allowed to pack organs, there are some very strict regulations about that,ya know.

Accidents happen.
Don't feel guilty.

At least you tried your best. I woud have run away screaming: "GROOOOOOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS" Or would have died of a heart attack.

I didn't know they shipped hearts all over the world. Especially not in this manner. Unless someone can confirm that it really was for a heart transplantation, I would assume it was for medical science reasons.

I don't feel guilty,I know it's not my fault.
Yes,it's possible the heart wasn't meant for transplantation but just for sience.I have no way of knowing that.Organs do get shipped all over the world for transplantation though.

I of course always thought it was like on t.v.- like ER. A med helicopter zooms off to get the heart to the patient right in the nick of time!!! 🙄

What a goof.

No idea. When something like this happens,it becomes a matter for the people of the dangerous goods department.I don't know what they did with it.Maybe they threw it away,or maybe they repacked it and shipped it anyway.I do hope they won't use it for a transplant.
Allthough,a dirty heart is prolly better than a malfunctioning one 😉

Hey Brother Sir,
I hate that you had to go through a terrible experience like that. You should not have even been in that situation! The person(s) who boxed the heart, I hope will be held accountable for their actions. All I can say is that the "Game Ball" goes to you!
