...listening to some of the tunes that I have on my 'puter (well not actually mine, long story), songs that I for some reason have, but never bother listening to.

So far I've unearthed a few shockers ('Return of the Mack' by Mark Morrison, 'King of my Castle' by the Wamdue Project, 'Wake me up before you go go' by Wham, 'The one and only' by Chesney Hawkes (oh the shame) of which I'm rightly ashamed of myself, but have been pleasantly surprised with a few whose excellence I had all too sadly forgotten and neglected....

'Foxy Lady' and several others by Jimi Hendrix
'Perfect Gentleman' by Wyclef Jean (lurrrve this song!)
'Hotel Yorba' by the White Stripes
'Afrika Shox' by Leftfield
'Message In a Bottle' by Sting and the Police (forgotten just how good they were - best band of the 80s in my opinion)
'Friday in Love' by The Cure
The utterly fantastic 'Emerge' by Fischerspooner
'You Really Got Me Going' by The Kinks
A superbly wonderful live recording of 'Mercedes Benz' by Janis Joplin

Ooooh. And now I've spotted the folder named Meatloaf. *gasp* Time to get reacquainted methinks with the king of stadium rock 😀

A few years back I wrote a parody of "Message in a Bottle" entitled "Need a Paper Towel?". You're right though, a good song.

[expectant] And what, pray tell, apart from sheer modesty, is stopping you from posting the lyrics? [/expectant]

I have obviously led a sheltered life. I have never heard of most of these. My problem is that I love music, but can never remember who they were written by or sung by, except for "Take me Home Country Roads". I memorized that one. :o)

I mostly listen to classical or easy listening to calm my nerves or put me to sleep.

Doug 🙂

Terribly sorry...I've forgotten 🙁. If you send me the actual lyrics, I could whip up another...

I mostly listen to classical too. Especially Chopin, Beethoven, Rachmaninov, and JS Bach. Most Excellent.

Is there an easy (read as free) way to convert music on a cd to MP3 or something like that? I have most stuff on Mini Disk these days. Anyway I am listening to Linoleum at the moment although I doubt many people have heard of them, the g/friend thinks I have very odd tastes in music, "why can't you like something boppy?" is her usual retort, or "how are you supposed to dance to that?" 🙄

Why pay for the CD and then transfer it to MP3 at no cost? Why not do your pirating on a file-sharing network like everyone else 😉?

Little while back I went to a concert where one of the pieces was Rachmaninov's 3rd piano concerto (if anything I prefer the first two) and I just couldn't come to terms with how fast and dextrous the pianist's hands were. Unbelievably skilfull, one could almost see the magic in the fingers. I'll never forget it.

Another time I went to go and see/listen to Beethoven's Violin Concerto, all of a sudden the conductor whipped out a violin that he seemed to have secreted down his trouser leg, turned round sharply and played the solo, sublimely too.

Every now and again I'll spend an entire afternoon listening to the first movement of Beethoven's 5th, over and over again. It's hard to have more fun.

I usually find that different moods tend to call for different styles of music, but yep, there's sheer genius in a lot of classical music especially.

I found the words to "Take Me Home Country Roads" just in case anyone was interested. 🙂

Take me Home Country Roads
John Denver

Almost heaven west Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains Shenandoah river
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains blowin' like a breeze
Country roads take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia mountain momma
Take me home country roads

All my memories gather round her
Miner's lady stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine teardrop in my eyes
Country roads take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia mountain momma
Take me home country roads

I hear her voice in the morning hour she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
Drivin' down the road I get a feelin'
That I should been home yesterday yesterday
Country roads take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia mountain momma
Take me home country roads

Country roads take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia mountain momma
Take me home country roads
Take me home country roads
Take me home country roads

I'll probably have this in my head all night. 🙂 I used to sing this all the time.

Well there is that, the simple reason is I do not know how to. This is a whole IT thing that i missed out on.

I travel a lot with work, so it would be good to have some music on my laptop for when I am stuck in hotel rooms bored. I have yet to blag a DVD player in my laptop.

Latex, MusicMatch (www.musicmatch.com) is a piece of (free) software that will enable you to convert music from a CD into .mp3 format. There are many others, best to try a few and see what you like most.

If anyone's interested, it's possible to convert music from vinyl onto regular audio CDs through a computer. My father has had an ongoing project for the last 18months or so doing this with all his old vinyl records.

PS Open discussion of P2P file sharing in terms of audio piracy can (in theory - or so I've been told) get the owners of the messageboard in trouble if they are deemed to be condoning it.

Mark,

I am only "backing up" my existing cd's so there is no legal problems there.

I agree. Simply beautiful. I could listen to it all day. I have a few records, but no CD's. I need to work on that with all the time I'm at the computer.

I sincerely believe, with no qualifications, that the second movement of the seventh symphony of Beethoven is the most sublime thing ever produced by the human mind.

And I'm not condonging file sharing! Have at you, vile pirates 😉!
