My fiance is a good...*ok, really really good* chess player, and we have started playing online chess. 14 games and guess who has lost every single one of them? Yep, me! I'm horrible. I haven't played chess in probably ten years or more, but still. I'm tired of being beat so easily and as patient and good humored as he is, he's bound to get bored eventually.
So, what are some great ways of kicking his butt? Any thing I should be going for? Trying to do? Watching for? He denies it but he seems great at seeing one or two moves in the future and succesfully blocks everything I try! This is war! Anybody care to help?
My username is silly- you can just call me Erin and I'm really enjoying the heck out of the game- want to get better and learn more!
Thanks!
Yeah, that's the bummer Erin, no shortcuts. You're are going to have to take your lumps and hang in there.
However, a good tip I did find in these forums at one time is to play people that are within 100 points of your rating either way. You can narrow it down from that if you wish. But it does seem to work.
You sometimes will win against those with a higher rating than you and sometimes those with a lower rating than you will win. But you will learn from them all and meet some wonderful people.
Enjoy your time spent here! 😀
Have you read any books? A good beginner book is 'My System' by Aaron Nimzowitsch. Some of the things he say are a little out dated (it was written in the 20's) but hundreds of thousands of players swear by it. It's probably the best 'first book'. If you only plan to read one, this is probably it 😉
Well, I'm going to throw another book out here: "Play Winning Chess" by Kasporov. It's great for the *very* beginner. It explains much of the basic strategy behind chess and is an easy read for someone that is not a hardcore chess player.
If you like that one, you can continue on with the rest of his series.
Hmm, Well very basic advice is just to try to make sure that when you move a piece its covered by another, i.e it can't be taken for nothing..
Try to keep some pawns on one side back so you can castle your king into there and keep it nice and safe 🙂
Always keep an eye on your king and where it can move too..
Look for your any of your opponents pieces that are not protected by another and go for it..
Try to get your opponent in check, it generally helps things.
The more u play the more u will learn and figure out different openings and styles of play..
Most of all.. Enjoy! you'll beat him soon!
Originally posted by FloodsRHP has the option of playing "set piece" games. You can set the board up so that your fiance starts without one of his rooks, or whatever. I did this with my girlfriend when I was trying to teach her how to play. I just kept starting with fewer pieces until she was able to beat me. That way she had a chance of winning and tried harder than if she knew she was going to lose from the beginning.

A pair of size 12 steel toecapped Doc Martens may help you to kick his butt. Other than that stick with it, it will come back to you in time.
My wife had no idea how to play chess at all, a few games, a couple of "let her wins" and she caught the bug. She will never be a great player but she is enjoying the game which is all that matters. 😀🙂
