Music and meaningful lyrics can elicit strong emotional response. This one this morning:
Ae Fond Kiss
Ae fond kiss, and then we sever;
Ae fareweel, alas, for ever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.
Who shall say that Fortune grieves him,
While the star of hope she leaves him?
Me, nae cheerful twinkle lights me;
Dark despair around benights me.
Had we never lov'd sae kindly,
Had we never lov'd sae blindly,
Never met-or never parted,
We had ne'er been broken-hearted.
Fare-thee-weel, thou first and fairest!
Fare-thee-weel, thou best and dearest!
Thine be ilka joy and treasure,
Peace, Enjoyment, Love and Pleasure!
Ae fond kiss, and then we sever!
Ae fareweel alas, for ever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I'll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee.
I'll wage thee...
I'll wage thee...
I'll wage thee...
I like big butts and I can not lie
You other brothers can't deny
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist
And a round thing in your face
You get sprung, wanna pull up tough
'Cause you notice that butt was stuffed
Deep in the jeans she's wearing
I'm hooked and I can't stop staring
Oh baby, I wanna get with you
And take your picture
My homeboys tried to warn me
But that butt you got makes me so horny
Ooh, Rump-o'-smooth-skin
You say you wanna get in my Benz?
Well, use me, use me
'Cause you ain't that average groupie
I've seen them dancin'
To hell with romancin'
She's sweat, wet,
Got it goin' like a turbo 'Vette
I'm tired of magazines
Sayin' flat butts are the thing
Take the average black man and ask him that
She gotta pack much back
So, fellas! (Yeah!) Fellas! (Yeah!)
Has your girlfriend got the butt? (Hell yeah!)
Tell 'em to shake it! (Shake it!) Shake it! (Shake it!)
Shake that healthy butt!
Baby got back!
This plays in my head when I’m swimming in the sea alone.
Perfect Darkness ~ Fink
Perfect memories fall down like ashes*
From the fire we made love and everything we gotta say
we save it. See the black heels around the fire.
Feel the night air in Perfect darkness babe. Perfect darkness is all i can see.
Deep water stay under.
See it rolling over your head and just roll with it until it's all good yeah.
Deep water a little deeper then you thought feel it going over the edge and just go with it
until it's all good yeah.
Keep those brown eyes wide open for a for this moment we own for now.
And everything we gonna do we do it. See the black clouds fall out of fear
Feel it rise up in perfect darkness. Perfect darkness is all I can see.
Deep water stay under.
See it rolling over you head and just roll with it until it's all good yeah.
Deep water a little deeper then you thought feel it going over the edge and just go with it
until it's all good yeah.
Compass points out in all directions.
From this moment we over now.
With everything we do we gonna do it.
And everything we do we're gonna do it.
And everything we're gonna do we do it.
And everything we do we're gonna do it.
And everything we're gonna do we do it.
Perfect darkness is all I can see.
Perfect darkness is all I can see.
Glück, das mir verblieb (Marietta's Lied), Marietta's aria from Die Tote Stadt
Glück, das mir verblieb,
rück zu mir, mein treues Lieb.
Abend sinkt im Hag
bist mir Licht und Tag.
Bange pochet Herz an Herz
Hoffnung schwingt sich himmelwärts.
Wie wahr, ein traurig Lied.
Das Lied vom treuen Lieb,
das sterben muss.
Ich kenne das Lied.
Ich hört es oft in jungen,
in schöneren Tagen.
Es hat noch eine Strophe--
weiß ich sie noch?
Naht auch Sorge trüb,
rück zu mir, mein treues Lieb.
Neig dein blaß Gesicht
Sterben trennt uns nicht.
Mußt du einmal von mir gehn,
glaub, es gibt ein Auferstehn.
Joy, that near to me remains,
Come to me, my true love.
Night sinks into the grove
You are my light and day.
Anxiously beats heart on heart
Hope itself soars heavenward.
How true, a sad song.
The song of true love,
that must die.
I know the song.
I heard it often in younger,
in better days.
It has yet another verse--
Do I know it still?
Though sorrow becomes dark,
Come to me, my true love.
Lean (to me) your pale face
Death will not separate us.
If you must leave me one day,
Believe, there is an afterlife.
To anyone who has unexpectedly lost a life-partner.
This song, almost inexplicably, brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to it. It's almost as if I was hypnotised at some point and this song was set as a trigger. Maybe it's got something to do with having lived in different places around the world and therefore having shed a series of environments and their occupants as I moved on each time.
A man said
Why, why does travelling
in cars and in trains make him feel sad,
a beautiful sadness.
I've felt this before.
It's the people in the cities you'll never know,
it is everything you pass by,
wondering, will you ever return?
The colours of rowboats, the greens and the blues.
Orange grove side streets you only see halfway.
And beaches in winter
and when kites are flown.
It's the people in the cities you'll never know,
it is everything you pass by,
wondering, will you ever return?
Another one similar in a way ~ this time about leaving one's country and not returning.
Fare you well, my honey
Fare you well, my only true one
All the birds that were singing
Have flown except you alone
Goin' to leave this brokedown palace
On my hands and knees, I will roll, roll, roll
Make myself a bed by the waterside
In my time - in my time - I will roll, roll roll
In a bed, in a bed
By the waterside I will lay my head
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul
River gonna take me
Sing me sweet and sleepy
Sing me sweet and sleepy
All the way back home
Its a far-gone lullaby
Sung many years ago
Mama, Mama many worlds I've come
Since I first left home
In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head
Going home, going home, by the riverside I will rest my bones
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul
Going to plant a weeping willow
On the banks green edge it will grow
Grow, grow
Sing a lullaby beside the water
Lovers come and go - the river roll, roll, roll
In a bed, in a bed, by the waterside I will lay my head
Fare you well, fare you well, I love you more than words can tell
Listen to the river sing sweet songs, to rock my soul

On a Downtown Train
Tom Waits
This particular excerpt floors me. I wish I were such a poet:
"Outside another yellow moon
Has punched a hole in the nighttime, yes
I climb through the window and down the street
I'm shining like a new dime
The downtown trains are full
With all those Brooklyn girls
They try so hard to break out of their little worlds
Well, you wave your hand and they scatter like crows
They have nothing that will ever capture your heart
They're just thorns without the rose
Be careful of them in the dark"
Get's me every time I hear it:
"Yesterday"
Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away.
Now it looks as though they're here to stay.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be.
There's a shadow hanging over me.
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.
Why she had to go?
I don't know, she wouldn't say.
I said something wrong.
Now I long for yesterday.
Yesterday love was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to hide away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Why she had to go?
I don't know, she wouldn't say.
I said something wrong.
Now I long for yesterday.
Yesterday love was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to hide away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

@ghost-of-a-duke saidTo think that Paul's inspiration for that song of genius started on a restaurant napkin: "Scrambled eggs, oh my baby how I love your legs". It's incredible!

Clearly, his muse has a sense of humor.
I've always found the lyrics to this Tears for Fears classic rather profound:
- Mad World, 1982 (Tears for Fears)
All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you 'cause I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it's a very, very
Mad world
Mad world
Mad world
Mad world
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher…
