What media player are you using? Perhaps it is an audio codec. Try the VLC Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc). If the problem still persists, perhaps just try a full system reset (fixes most program/codec problems).

Check Windows Update to see if there are any Media Player codec updates available.

It must be a codec problem, DVD use higher bits than CD's, 24 bits V 16 on a CD so it has to be able to decode those rates, I think the sample rate is differant also, 96,000 samples/second I think. So it is the decoding. Do you have a PCI sound card? If so, you may be able to get to the settings in the device manager. It may just be a button setting off.

Also if the sound card suggestion doesn't fix it, try installing this codec pack.

Try turning the volume up. 😀

The one on the computer I mean, not on the speaker.

are you playing the cd's through a seperate drive though? if so, its the drive thats causing the problem, this could just be a simple matter of turning the volume dial on the dvd drive... if problem still persists, you'll need to go to the control panel in windows, go to sounds, from there i think you need to find the properties option, this will allow you to select which volume controls are displayed, you must select video, make sure that box is not muted... if it is, cd's will play but not dvd's.... if problem still persists, check its not the dvd itself, try another dvd in the drive, if problem still insists reinstall the sound card, if problem still insists get back to me.... by the way, the problem shouldnt be a codec because the system should tell you it needs a codec in order to run...

Not always.
Sometimes you have to look for the error details.

You are missing an audio lead from the cd/dvd player to your sound card.
