I've just claimed a win by timeout on the eighth day. My opponent
may think I shouldn't have done. On the other hand, I didn't want to
slog on with another easy but slow, grinding win. Juggling with several
games is difficult enough without that kind of irritation.
Another thing - though I don't think it was true in this case - is that
some people obviously just abandon a game when they are losing
instead of resigning.
All very complicated, the etiquette of playing on the net.
I'm one of the players who claimed a time-out victory on him.
However, I did contact him first with e-mail to find out what was going
on with him. His reply indicated that he was not going to finish the
game, so I went ahead and claimed it. I don't know why he didn't just
resign the games if he wasn't going to finish them.
Achakes, I am one of the players who claimed a victory on Tim Robinson. Did you notice that mwmiller said he contacted TR by e-mail and was basically informed that the game would not be continued. Mr. Robinson made a conscious decision not to continue his games, for what reason..I don't know, but the point is that he did not have the courtesy to inform anyone about it even though he could have. Any games he lost by "claimed victories" were well deserved. When you sign up to play on this, or any other game site, you assume a certain obligation to those you play against. Your opponents have a right to expect that you will finish the games you started and do it in a timely manner. If something comes up, say a vacation, a family emergency, a military obligation, or whatever, all you have to do is kindly inform your opponents and most of them will wait till the cows come home. However, if you just quit moving with no explaination whatsoever, then you deserve what you get. I don't even use the reminder button anymore. No one has ever had to remind me to make a move. I know when it's my turn and I'll bet you do too! Why should I have to babysit my opponent? What am I, his Momma? I think you are to be commended for your patience and consideration of others in not desiring to claim a win against them. Too bad the others don't have the same consideration for you!
Well......I've still got a game open with TR. I'm going to claim the win
as soon as this is posted. It's a very close game and a good game at
that but with his rating now soooo low I'm not hanging around for TR
to return. Should be beat me my rating will be stuffed. All I can say to
TR is that there are a lot worse things to be obsessed by.......I hope
he's not moved onto class a pharmaceuticals.
I didn't mention it in my previous post, but Tim Robinson's reason for
not playing anymore was because he felt playing chess was becoming
an obsession with him and he wanted to get away from it. I asked
what his intentions were regarding the game we had in progress, and
he said to go ahead and claim it when it timed out. I waited one more
day after it timed out, then I went ahead and claimed it.
I agree that if a person just wants to stop playing, they should do it by
resigning.
I also claimed a victory over Mr. Robinson. I don't particularly like to
claim vitory, and don't right away. But since I've come to this site,I've
heard some crazy things about the ethics of some players:Claiming
victory as soon as it hits the screen;why should a person be worried
about rating points that don't give you anything? You don't get
anything from it,but a little praise and self-gratification. If you get to
the top and did'nt truly prove to be the best, your praise is hollow and
your self-gratification,empty; On the flipside,I've heard of players hold
off playing because they stand to lose considerable amounts of
points. Wait till that players rating goes up,before taking the loss.
That's being obsessed with ratings. Me myself, would'nt be able to stop
playing for any legnth of time. I'd have to be in traction, like I was a
few weeks ago.:-) The thing that seems the most unsportsmanlike is,
that people would go as far as to use a computer or anylizer to help
them win a game. That takes from the very essence of the game
itself. One mind against the other.I love this game win or lose, points
or no points, top dog or low man on the totem pole. And I love this
site. This site was made for a CHESS FEIND like me. All this poor
sportsmanship, dishonors this centuries old game. SPEAKING OF CHESS
FEINDS! ME AND MY CHESS FEINDS ARE EXTENDING AN INVITATION TO
ALL OTHER GROUPS OUT THERE. IF YOU'RE INTERESTED IN A LITTLE
TOURNAMENT WITH THE CHESS FEINDS,CHALLENGE ME,FU-MAN31 TO
AN UNRATED,PRIVATE GAME. LET'S PUT SOME SPORTSMANSHIP AND
TRUE COMPETITIVNESS FIRST ON THIS
SITE.

I think it sux when one goes on vacation (like I did) for a week or so and
someone challenges and wins by timeout before a person even moves the first
pawn. Now that's a cheesy win. This site should correct that. It should only
let a person claim a win if a person has accepted a game by at least moving
once. If I challenge someone and they don't respond, you better believe that
I'll claim a win cause it's been done to me. It sux, but until they change that
on here, that's the way it is.
